To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN T. DUFAU, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Fastening Device and Padlock, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in fastening devices and padlocks for firmly fas toning and securely locking boxes, cases, doors, and any other objects for which bolts or looks are generally used.

The object of this invention is to provide a fastening device which shall secure a safe, economical, simple, and expeditious mode of fastening,locking,and sealing boxes and other objects for which looks or bolts are used without danger of their becoming unfastened or unlocked or of removing or losing the padlock.

This improvement is especially applicable to the improvement in box fasteners for which Letters Patent No. 386,188 were issued to Joseph Davy July 17, 1888, and to the improvement in box-fasteners and sealing devices for which Letters Patent No. 429,510 were issued to Joseph Davy and myself June 3, 1890, and of both of which I am now the sole owner and holder. In the box-fasteners secured by Letters Patent No. 386,188 a new.

fastener was devised which secured a safe, simple, expeditious, and cheap mode of fastening which is used for fastening securely and holding closely packed cases and boxes which are subject to much handling without danger of their becoming unfastened; but said fasteners could be opened by persons ac quainted with the device without danger 'of detection, and the bolt and staple used therein were so loosely connected as to permit free play of the hasp within a limited space and the possible opening of the cover or lid of the box to a corresponding extent. In the boxfasteners secured by Letters Patent N 0. 429,510 said devices were improved upon by rendering it impossible to open the same without certainty of ascertaining the fact, also by precluding to a certain extent the possibility of opening them at all wrongfully, and by avoiding the danger of a partial opening of the box-cover or other object on which the fastener might be used by reason of the free play of the hasp referred to. By the subject of the present application I desire to improve upon the said fastening devices, first, by rendering it impossible for any one not holding the key used in connection therewith to open the same; second, to preclude the removal, theft, or loss of the padlock or fastening device, and, third, to achieve economy, safety, convenience by making the padlock itself serve as the fastening-bolt.

In the accompanying drawings similar parts are throughout represented by similar letters.

Referring to the drawings by letters, S indicates the staple of a padlock, and B the casing of said padlock, provided therein, near the top thereof, with a suitable opening 0, through which the staple passes, as shown. This staple S is provided on the inner side thereof on one prong with a groove or recess a, for a purpose hereinafter described, and is adapted to be secured into the article to be fastened or upon a suitable plate, which in turn is secured uponthe article to be fastened.

' In the casing B of the padlock is a sliding bolt X about equal in height with the interior of the casing and adapted to be slid from one side thereof toward the other and is provided in its upper end with 'a right-angle slot or opening, the horizontal end being indicated by or, while the vertical end thereof is indicated by w. This slot is ofs uch size as to register at all times with the opening 0 in. the casing of the padlock and is adapted to permit the passage of the staple S therethrough and through the opening 0, as is evident. The lower end of thisslide-bolt is provided with asuitable key-receiving chamber for the purpose of unlocking the device when desired. This sliding bolt is also provided, centrally thereof, with a groove or channel E, having at one side thereof the recess e, adapted to pass over a pin e at one side of the lock. D is a suitable pin or stud secured in said channel at the end opposite the recess 6.

D indicates suitable tumblers loosely pivoted at one side. upon the pin e and having in their opposite ends generally rectangular-- shaped openings adapted to receive and fit over the pin D when the lock is open, and dare suitable springs passing over said tumblers D and secured thereto and having their free ends resting against the upper side of said channel and are for the purpose of holding said tumblers in engagement with the pin or lug D.

H is a hasp adapted to be secured to the lid of the box or other article to be fastened and is provided with an opening 0 therein of the same shape as the exterior of the padlock and staple in cross-section, so as to permit the passage of the lock and staple therethrough, as is evident.

Zis an opening in the extreme end of the hasp, and 'n is an opening in one side of the padlock and passes through the casing thereof.

The operation of this device is as follows: The staple S having been inserted into the opening 0 of the lock-case is secured in any suitable manner to the article upon which it is to be used, and the hasp H is secured in proper position upon the cover thereof. When it is ready to close and fasten the box or other receptacle, the lock-case B is turned up and the hasp H passes thereover and over the staple S against the side of the box or receptacle. The lock-case B is then dropped down upon the prong of the staple, provided with a recess or channel a. The key is then inserted in the lock-case and being turned throws the sliding bolt X forward and the horizontal end a: of the slot therein across the prong of said staple and into the slot ain said prong, thus preventing the said look from being removed from said prong of the staple, as is evident. Then it is desired to open the receptacle when thus locked, the key is inserted in the lock and the sliding bolt X thrown back until the staple comes in the vertical portion of the slot, when the lock can then be removed from the prong and the hasp slipped over both staple and lock.

The staple S may be driven into the wall of the box; but instead it may be made part of a metal plate or casting, which may then be affixed to the wall of the box or door in such a manner that the staple will be in the same position as is herein described. The latter method has proved the most advantageous.

To open or close the fastener, the padlock B is raised at right angles to box-wall and to staple. The hasp is then fitted over it, as in the former patents described.

A method of sealing the fastener to be used in conjunction with the padlock B and the hasp H, by means whereof may be detected any tampering with or interference with the lock or object fastened, may be provided substantially as with the former fasteners. In the hasp H, I make an aperture Z. A similar aperture n is made in casing of padlock. When the padlock is closed and the door or box thereby fastened, I pass through apertures Z and n the wire or string 20, and twisting it, so that it is held firmly in position, I aflix to the ends thereof a piece of lead or wax K, upon which may be imprinted a seal. The padlock cannot then be opened, even by one holding a key, without destroying the integrity of the sealing device, instantly noticeable, and the padlock cannot be opened at all wrongfully nor sawed or broken from the staple, for when the fastener is locked the exposed portions of the staple may be sawed entirely away without affecting the security of the look, as that portion of the staple which passes through the slide-bolt and contains the notch Ct cannot be reached except by unlocking and raising the padlock.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a box-fastener or similar fastening device the combination of a staple S having in one prong a notch or groove a, in combination with a padlock B, permanently swung in the staple, and the hasp H attached to the lid or cover of the box, and provided with a cross-shaped slot adapted to engage the staple and also to pass over the padlock when it is raised at right angles to said staple and to box-wall, said padlock consisting of a casing provided with an aperture through which passes the notched prong of staple S, and also provided interiorly with a slide-bolt X consisting of one solid piece of metal, having an opening a; through which also passes the said notchedprong of staple S, and so arranged that when locked the slide-bolt X is immovably engaged by the groove 0. of staple S, said slide-bolt X being moved and operated by key, through aperture P, in exterior casing of padlock, engaging tumblers, all substantially as hereinbefore described and set forth.

2. In a fastening device of the character described, the combination of a staple having a channel or recess in one prong thereof; a lock-case permanently swung on said staple, and provided 011 its inner side with a sliding bolt, and means substantially as described for throwing the said bolt from one side of the lock-case to the other to engage or disengage said staple; with a hasp provided with a suitable opening adapted to permit the passage therethrough of said lock-case and staple, as set forth.

3. In a fastening device of the character described, the combination of a staple having a groove or channel in one prong thereof; a lock-case permanently swung thereon, a slidable bolt in said lock-case provided atone end thereof with a slot having vertical and horizontal ends, and means, substantially as described, for holding said sliding bolt in locked or unlocked position, with a hasp provided with an opening in one end thereof, and adapted to be passed over said look and staple, as set forth.
