TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it-known that I, THEODDRE R. TIMBY, of Saratoga Springs, Saratoga county, New York, have inventedv a new and improved Self-Ventilating Door; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, elear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to keep the rooms of a buildingthose rooms which Communicate with the hall-in a perfectly ventilated state by means of openings or holes made through the upper and lower parts of the door, and covered by delectors, as hereinafter fully shown and described. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a side view of a door provided with my improvement; and
Figure 2, a section ofthe same taken in the line :1: x, iig. I.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a door which may beg'construeted and hung in the usual way. Through the upper part of the door there are made openings a, a series of them side by side, and these openings at each side of the door `have mouldings or cleats, B, nailed kor otherwise secured over them, said mouldings or cleats being bevelled or hollowed out at their inner surfaces to serve as deflectors and admit of the air passing freely through the openings, as shown by the arrows 1, in fig. 2. Through the lower part of the door there are made similar openings or an oblong lnortise, a', which is covered at cach side of the door by a moulding or cleat, vB', the same as those over the openings a in the upper par-toi' the door. I would remark that aseries of holes or an oblong mortise may be made both at the upper and lower parts of the door. The cold air 'from the hallV passes through the lower opening or mortise a into the lower part of thc room, as indicated by the arrow 2, while the warm air in the room passes out through the openinga., in the upper part of the door, into the hall, as indicated by the arrow l. v
Thus, by this simple means, perfect ventilation is obtained, and without marring the appearance of the door, even when for an expensive and highly iinished building.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Ventilating rooms by means of the holes a or slats a at the top or bottom of doors provided upon each side with bevelled 0r hollowed-'out deiiectors B or B immediately above the said holes, and projecting over them substantially as herein shown and described.
'lhe above speeieation of my invention signed by me this 12th day of February, 1867.
THEODORE It. TIMBY.
