LETTER-CARRIERS BAG.
SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,987, dated January 23, 1900.
Application filed October 20, 1899.
To a/ZZ whom 'it riz/ay concern.-
Be it known that l, MICHAEL MCOARTHY, ot Boston, (Roxbury,) in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Letter-Carriers Bag, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a letter-carrie1"s bag such as is disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 702,501, filed on the 18th of January, 1899; and it embodies certain improvements with respect to the box or holder, which is secured in one end of the bag proper and forms the wall thereof at said end, the box or holder serving to carry letters, while the other part of the bag is adapted to carry papers and other like packages.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claims dene the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective View of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view with the side of the bag broken away, showing the interior in section. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. a is an elevation of the movable wall for the box or letter-holder.
The body A of the bag has a flap 5, which covers the top and extends down against one side thereof. The box or letter-holder B may be formed at one or both ends of the bag and is covered by the iiap 5. The outer end wall of this box or letter-holder B is slanted outward, as shown, and formed of two flaps 6, provided with independently operative fastening devices 7, by means of which arrangement the flaps may be secured together to close the letter-holder, or they may be opened for any distance throughout the height of the same. The inner wall 8 of the letter-holder is fastened at its lower end to the bottom of the bag and extends upwardly to the top of the letter-holder. Thisinner Wall 8 also forms the end wall of the main portion A of the bag, as shown best in Fig. 2. The inner wall 8 of the letter-holder has rings 9 attached to the side edges thereof, and these rings respectively slide on diagonally-disposed rods 10, secured to the side walls of the letter-holder Serial No. 734,199. (No model.)
B, thus permitting the wall 8 to be moved back and forth toward and from the outer end wall of the letter-holder B, so as to press snugly against the letters contained therein, such letters being indicated at 1l in Fig. 2. The upper end of the wall 8 is formed with a strap l2, provided with eyes or other suitable fastening' devices 14, which are adapted to engage with a nipple or like projection l5, formed on a rod 16, which is secured to the side walls of the letter-holder at the top thereof and extends transversely across the same just beneath the flap 5. The fastening devices 14 and l5 may be changed in any desired manner without departing from my invention. I attach no importance to the specic means by which the strap l2 is secured to the rod 16, except that these means must permit the adjustment of the strap to tighten the wall S according to the amount of matter Within the box or holder B.
It will be seen that by this arrangement the letter-carrier may place the large packages of his mail-matter in the main compartment A of the bag and that the letters may be placed in the desired order Within the letter-holder or box B. The movable wall 8 being tightened against the letters to hold them securely in the proper position will not permit of their being mixed or otherwise displaced. The flaps 6 may be opened at will to withdraw the letters.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A letter-carriers bag, having a body with an open top, a flap swinging over the body to close the top thereof, an inner wall situated in the bag and fastened at its lower end to the bottom of the bag, the side and top edges of the inner wall being free, and the Wall forming the baginto two compartments, and means for adjustably holding the upper end of the said inner wall, the end of the bag adjacent to said inner wall being formed of two fiaps having fastening devices for removably joining their contiguous edges.
2. A letter-ca1'riei"sbag, having a wall situated therein to form the bag into a main por tion and a letter-holder at one end of the bag, the Wall being fastened at its lower edge to the bottom of the bag and having its side and IOO top edges free, means for adjustably holding the upper end of the wall, and a flap attached to the bag to close the main portion thereof and the letter-holder.
3. A letter-carriers bag, having a wall situated therein and forming the bag into a main portion and a letter-holder, the wall having its lower end secured to the bottom of the bag and having its side and top edges free, means for adjustably holding the upper end of the wall, and two flaps forming the outer end wall of the letter-holder, such flaps having their inner vertical edges provided with fastening devices for removably joining them with each other, for the purpose specified. l
4. A letter-earriersbag,having a verticallydisposed wall situated therein to form the bag into two compartments, the lower end of the wall being permanently fastened t0 the bottom of the bag and the side and top edges of the wall being free, means for removably holding the upper end of the said wall, and guide- A rods fastened to the sides of the bag Within MICHAEL MCCARTHY.
