FlRE- EsoAPE LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 641,741, dated January 23, 1900. Applicationllled April 27, 1899. Serial No. 714,634. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VINCENT PA'ULTRAV- ERS, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escape Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fire-escape ladders, and has for its object to produce an easily made cheap rope ladder which will not twist and is not liable to become fouled or tangled.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a ladder embodying my invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a broken-away fragmentary view of a fireescape ladder. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the construction whereby the rungs or rounds are secured in place. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a section on line 4. 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, the ladder is made up of compound ropesab and rungs or rounds c, which are or may be combined with a hanger d and a weight 6, all of which will be described in detail without, however, limiting myself to such detail. The rope structure from which the ladder is made is a compound structure consisting of two members or ropes a a laid side by side, the strands of the rope a being twisted in one direction and the strands of the rope 0. being twisted in the opposite direction, the said two ropes being secured together by stitching a as clearly shown in Figs. 2,3, and 5. This compound rope structure is open at intervals for the insertion of the rungs or rounds a between the two ropes, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 to 5, and clamping-rings a are secured about the compound rope structure on either side of the rounds or rungs. By constructing the rope structure in the manner described the danger of twisting of the rope is obviated, and consequently the ladder will hang without twist. The construction shown in the drawings is the preferred construction of ladder, the eye or hanger d being clamped securely in place by the clamping-rin gs a, secured around the rope, and the lower end of the ladder being weighted by an iron bar or plate 6. The ends of the rounds or rungs are preferably notched, as shown, in order to produce a firm secure structure. For greater safety the ropes and rungs are submitted to the action of a fireproofing substance. I
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A ladder for fire-escape purposes comprising a pair of ropes laid side by side with the twist of one rope running in the opposite direction to the twist of the other rope in order to obviate twisting of the structure and rounds or rungs inserted between the said ropes and securing means embracing the said ropes above and below said rounds and adapted to maintain the rounds or rungs in position.
2. A ladder for fire-escape purposes, comprising a pair of ropes laid side by side with the twist of one rope running in the opposite directionto the twist of the otherin order to obviate twisting of the structure, means for securing the said two ropes together side by side, but nevertheless allowing openings between the ropes at intervals and rounds inserted into the said openings and thereby secured in place in the structure, substantially as described.
