sPnorr'rcA'rIoN forming pm of Letters Estant No. 640,698, dates January 2, i'eoo'. Appartamenti-my15,1893. sermnmsvosoo, ormoni.) ,j j
To all whom tn/tay don/cern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. PoR'rER, a citizen of the Unitedy States,.residing at New York, in the county of New York and State' of New York, have invented certain new and'- useful Improvements in Gas-Tips, of which the following is a specification.`
My invention relates to gas tips or burners;
j and has for its vobject to provide 'an exceedingly simple, cheap, and effective burner;
to 6 are side .views showing dilerent stagesv of making the tip.v Figs. 1 to 6 are vertical sections of the corresponding iigures. Fig. 7
' is a top .plan view ofthe tip. Fig. 8 is a secsize for purposes of clearness of illustration.`
tional view on, the'igline .8.8, Fig. 5, looking upward; 'and Figs.` aandlareside views ,of modified forms of tips. v
All the views are enlarged beyond the actual One o f the objects of my present invention is to provide a practicable tip or burner made 4from metal, and'while ofcourse my im' Vproved tip may be made in various ways, so long as itembodies substantially the same features of construction, I prefetto make it from a thimble of metal in substantially the manner illustrated and described hereinafter, and while various materials may be used in itsconstruction it is preferred to -make it from' aluminium or some similar non-corro'-- sivematerial which will n ot' be deleteriously afected'by the gas and ele1n\ents to which 'it is exposed.
Heretofore it hasgenerally been the practice to provide tips or burners with two classes of openings for the passage of the gas, one in the form of a slot extending transversely across the top of the tip toa greater or less extent and the other in the form of two holes, usuallyset opposite to each other; and one of the objects of my present invention is to provide an improved formof opening for the gas which is neither a simple slot ner two holes, but which maybe said to` comprise in a general way a combination of these two forms inthat there are practically two holes connected by an intermediate Slot, or, otherwise expressed, a continuous transverse slot having enlargements, at its ends, which enlargements are arranged atrany desiredl gle tothe intermediate slot and preferably ex'- tend above the same.-1{l'-This opening also is: preferably formedoutofoa right line-hat is, the holes or enlarged portions are ax"- ranged opposite to eachother ata greater or less angleand extend above the connectingl transverseslot. Again, theftp is formed so that the opposed openings or enlarged ends ofthe slot are in communication with what chamber, being what may be termedffopenA channels, with their ends or opeuingsfacing each other. I Y l h p In making-the burner inthe manner illus-j. trated inthe drawings' I take a thiinble of Vmetal substantially of the contour shown in Figs. l and 1iv vand by suitable instrumemtsY first draw or otherwise form it into the configuration illustrated in Figs. 2 and2,givin'git a tapered body portionA and a doxne-likeporf tion A'. .v 'It is then by suitable instruments or tools indented or compressed at the sides,
as at the points a, so that it has the appearance substantially of that shown in Figs. 3, 4, 3&,and 4, Fig. 3 showing one s idein elevation and Fig. 4 another side at ninety de? ing cross-sections of 'the `corresponding iig"- ures. It 'willbe seen thatthe indented por' tionsv a are brought quite closeto` each other,
so as to fornra passage b between them, and the ou ter portions iorr'n -channels c, which communicate with the.passage b.` The'thimble as thus formed is then notched crslotted" at its upper portion, as at C ,=Fig.'v 5.,and this forms the 'completed-tip, which is shown inl tions of the channels c, sothat the,.- opening, includes the passage b and the termmalsof the channels c.- .v Fig. 8 (which is an upward view on thecrosssection line ,S 8, Fig. '5) more clearly shovnsmaybe termed a semitip, in that the gas flows through only one of the enlarged porz5 It willyjbe seen that when the tip is in use i tions of the slot and is projected against the face -of the partition, the other enlarged portion of the slot being stopped or closed by gig partition, so thatno gas will escape therem. f
- tip have' been made; but itis not necessary ztodescribe the same in order to enable the general principles of my invention to be understobd.
in the ordinry way the gas entprs the cham-'- ber or'bodgportionA andp s up the convergngfportions of the channels c and through the passage b between the' com-v go pressed Wailea' until itreachosthe gas-opening, where there are, in effect, two streams of` gas opposing each other from the two faces,r
g c' of the noiohedhportion, andthesmseen' 'in thedrawings, are at au angle to each other, and at the same time there is a more direct` path for the gas through. the passageb, form. ing the contracted or slotted portion b'of the opening, and the result is that thenme is .in 1a vertical plane betweenl the twofaces c o 'of the tip and which-llame is almost round in shape, -givinga most satisfactory and perfect light, which is .not liable. to -ilicker and is steady and almost' entirely luminous, there beingbntsmall 'portion near the opening which rvis non-luminous.
No regulatoror.d'stribnting-diaphrsgrn or other device is necessary inconnection with the 'tip in "order to produce the most satisfactory results.` f Y l It will further be seen that all 'the operavtions are exceedingly simple and can be readilynnd ensilycarried out with great uni-l formit'y bysiitnble tools, not necessary to be described,"and that' the .tip is homogeneous 5g, in character and readily mede-from a' single 'thimble or similar shaped piece, which can be formed' in the usuel way from an ordinary blank of metal with little waste. l
`While`I preferto make the burner integral,
6o the portions shown in section, Fig. 4! and 6 5 ufacture I am infavor of making the burner mayvbe'strncknp and formed in any desired mauner`and afterward cemented or welded or otherwise joined to form e complete burner, although from my present experience in manfrom s single piece.
Othcrlinodieations of this general type of While Idprefer the form of gasfopeningdescribed an illustrated, it is evident that other forms may be usedin connection-with other features of my invention, and the form of ges-opening may be used in burners embodying other features of constrnctiomwithout departing from the .spirit of any invention. Furthermore, while'my invention is primarily various j. featn res for other purposes-such, for instance', as' nozzles 'for liquids or vaporsand do' not limit myself to any particular use.
What I claim is- 1. A gas tip or burner, the opening of which is in the form of a concave slot enlarged at the ends, substantially as described.
2. A ges tip orburner, the opening ot which is in the form-of a slot enlarged etA the ends,
portion, substantially as described.
l., A gas tip or burner, the opening of which ends, the enlarged ends .being at an angle to thecentral portion of the slot, substantially as described.
4. A gas portion at its end, the opposite faces ofthe notched portion having enlarged openings connected rbye contracted slot, substantial! as described.,v
5. A gesl tip or burner, having n chamber communicating with two chsnnelstbroughopposed openings, substantially :is-described. 6. i A gas tip or burner, having two. opposed mediate narrow slot andccxnlpnnicating with an inner chamber having two channels connecting with said openings, substantially as described... Y
'L 'A gas tip or burner, consisting' of a thimble with sido `indentures and .algaslopening between said indentnres, substantially as described;
ble with side indentures,"and.a notched portion, the gas opening `being formedA in the notched portion, substantially as described.
9. A gos tip or burner, consisting of n thinn-1 .ble with side indentures, anda notched portion, the gas-opening being in the form of a slot enlarged at the ends and-being located scribed." I i 10. Ay gas tip or burner, consisting of a metallic thimble having indented Walls o, and a ends, su bstantially gis described.
VIn testimony whereof Ifhave signed my two subscribing witnesses. .t WILLIAM H.PORTER.`
