IMPROVEMENT IN GOGKS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. ALBURGER, of Philadelphia, Philadelphia county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Compression Cocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable-others skilled in the art to inakc and use the same, reference being had to .the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of my improved cock.
Figure 2, a cross-section of the screw-spigot, taken on the line a z, iig. 1.
Figure 3, a detached section view of the spigot.
Figure 4, a bottom end view of the same.
l Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in compression cocks and faucets, and it consists in thc combination of the follower provided with an elastic and metallic packing upon. its lower end, with a flanged thimble, f spiral spring, and elastic packing near its upper end, said thimble fitting over the upper sidcor top of the spring, thereby preventing the sharp edge of the latter from cutting away and destroying the packing, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the follower upon the spigot C of an ordinary compression cock, B, 'rrp which a is theiifiuitb way through' the raised valve-seat'c. The follower A is provided with a washer, e. made of block tin or any suitable soft metal or other substance, which washer has a circular groove in the face for-med to t over the upper side of the raised seat c, upon which the spigot bears when the cock is closed. Between the end of the' follower A and the metallic Washer e is placed an'elastic packing or washer, e', whereby ap'erfect joint is formed between the softmetallic packing and `the follower. Upon the upper end of the follower A, and surrounding the spigot C, a spiral spring', D, is placed, said spring having its coils iiattened, as shown in fig. 3, its upper end d', bevelled upon the under` side to t into a corresponding bevel in the centre onmiddlecoil. The spigot C is provided with a bevelled ring, E', firmly secured thereto, as seen in figs. I and 3, tlieupper inclined side of the ring fitting and working in the correspondingly inclined cap G, attached to the top of the cock, through which the spigot works. Surrounding the spigot above the spring D, and resting against the under side ofthe ring E', is placed the packing E. In the compression cocks heretofore made this packing has, by the action of the sharpened or bevelled edge of the upper end of the spiral spring, been cut away and worn out, rendering the frequent application of a new packing necessary. To obviate this diieulty I place inside of the inner cireumvference of the spring D a thimble, F, whose upper edge is turned over, forming a flange resting upon the upper" side of the spring, thereby preventing its sharpened end d from coming in contact with the packing, as is evident.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The follower A, having its metallic packing e and elastic packing e', in combination with spring D, flanged thimble F, packing E, and spigot C, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
The above specification signed by me this 21st day of January, 1867.
