Beit known that I, W. T. WYLIE, of New Castle, Lawrence county, Pennsylvania, have invented an mprovement in Brushes for 'Shnvingand other purposes; und I do hereby d'eclurethe following tube a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference bcinghad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. 'n l My invention consists of certain devices, fully described hereufter, combined with a brush with which is connected a reservoir containing the material to ,be distributed by thc brush, the said devices facilitating the transfer of the material from thereservoir to the brush.

In order toenable others skilled in the art to make and use myinvcntion, I will now proceed t-o describe its construction and operation. On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms u part oi this specilication- :Figure l is an external view ot`- :r shaving-brush with my improvement.

The body A of' the br'ush is hollow, and in thc lower end of the lsume is secured, inV any suitable manner, the usual mass of bristles or'hnirs B. Near the upper end ofthe mass of bristles B are inserted a numbc'r'of small tubes a a, which communicate withthe interior ot` the hollow body A, for a purpose described hereafter. Into the upper end of' the body A screws 4the lower open endof a cylindrical metal casing C, and to the upper' end of the lutterl is fitted a screw-csp, D. To'the casing C is fitted a piston, E, on the rod b of. which is cut a thread correspondingv to that in a nut, F, the latter being so ,secured-to the cup that it can turn freely on without being detached from the same. At the uppersidc of the nut Fis u projection, e, o'n to which screws a. cap, G, of the form shown in the drawing, and at the lower cn'dot' the body A of the brush are threads adapted to those at the end ot' .'i..ylind1'icall cap, H, which, when secured to the brush, encloses the 'bristles B.

'lo prepare thebrush for use the easing' is rst'dctached from the body A, and the nutF is turned so as to draw the'piston to the upper end of the casing. The casing C and the .interior-of -the `body A are then filled with soap or shaving-cream, the casing is secured to the body ns before, and the cap G is detached, when the brush i lis ready for use. When the brush is to be used the nut F is turned so as to move-tho piston E downwards 'fand 1hus force a quantity of .the shaving-cream through the tubes acmong the bristles. The latter arotheu ag "tid in a small quantity of water, in such a manner as to dissolvctlie soapin the water, und thus produce thelather desired, an additional supply of soap being obtained, when required, by moving the piston still further downward.

I am aware that W. S. Jewett 'obtained a patent on the 10th of April, 1849, fora shaving-brush, 4*in which a. piston was so operated as to discharge soap from o; hollowlm-nd-le through tubes into a. brush. Ink this'brush,V

however, the piston travels on c revolving screw projecting into the soap reservoir. 'lle threads of -`the lScrew are therefore apt to become clogged with soap, while the lutter is discoiored bythe actionof the hard metal of which lthe screw is made. A feather is also required to prevenr' the piste/u from turning with the screw, S0 that' there is considcrablefriction and wear upon the parts. By' securing the piston toI u screw travelling in n nut revolving in the upper end of the case, as described, the screw is preserved from contactwith the contents of thc euse, while the screw is protected from injury/when the.piston is drawn outward, by the cop G.V
