Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM I-I. RUEF, OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE ADRIANOE, PLATT & COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CUTTER FOR MOWlNG-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,562,. dated April 3, 1900.
Application filed August 14,1899. Eerial No. 727,190. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. RUEF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutters for Mowing-Machines, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the triangular knife-sections which are employed in mowing and harvesting machines and which are secured side by side upon a reciprocating cutter or scythe bar.
The object of this invention is to secure these knife-sections to their supporting-bar by simple, inexpensive, and reliable means.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of two knife-sections secured side by side to the cutter-bar and provided with curved interlocking extensions and recesses. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section in line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan View showing the knife-sections provided with angular interlocking extensions and recesses.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures. g
A represents the knife-sections, having in their general outline the usual triangular form, bounded by the forwardly-converging beveled cutting edges (1, square abutting faces co, and the base or butt I).
O is the usual cutter or scythe bar, upon which the sections A are arranged side by side and to which they are secured. The sections abut against each other between their beveled cutting edges and the butt-ends by the square abutting faces a, which stand at right angles to the base b. Each section is provided at one side, over the cutter-bar and near the middle of its square abutting face ct, with a laterally-projecting extension 61 and at the opposite side, in its square abutting face, with a recess 6 of like form, so that the extension (1 of one section fits into the recess 6 of the adjacent section. These extensions and re= cesses may be of various forms. For instance,
in Fig. 1 these parts are shown of substantially-semicircular form, while in Fig. 3 the extension 03 and the recess e are shown of angular or pointed form. Each section is provided in its lateral extension with a hole f,
' through which a rivet g or a screw passes into the cutter-bar. This rivet-hole is arranged in line with the square abutting faces a, at the junction of the two sections. The rivet passing through this extension secures the latter firmly to the cutter-bar, and as the extension interlocks With the adjacent section by entering the recess thereof and the sections bear against each other with their square abutting faces this rivet also serves to steady the'contiguous portion of the adjacent section, thus securely holding the interlocked portions of the two sections on the cutter-bar and preventing any displacement of the sections with reference to each other. Each section is further secured to the cutter-bar by one or more additional rivets or screws, the drawing showing one additional rivet h passing through a hole '5 in each section.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination with the cutter-bar, of knife-sections, each provided near its base with square abutting faces and having at one side an extension which projects laterally from one of said abutting faces andwhich is provided with a perforation for a rivet or screw arranged in line with said abutting face and having in the abutting face on the opposite side a recess of like form which receives the extension of the adjacent section, and fastening devices which pass through the perforations of the extensions of the sections and secure the same to the cutter-bar at the j unction of adjacent sections, substantially as set forth.
2. A knife-section provided near its base with square abutting faces and having at one side an extension which projects laterally from one of said abutting faces and which is provided with a perforation for a rivet or screw arranged in line with said abutting face and having in the abutting face on the opposite side a recess of like form, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand this 8th day of August, 1899.
WILLIAM H. RUEF.
