To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LWILLIAM C. ZICKEFOOSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Fence- Iost, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tilting fences, and has for its object to provide an improved tilting adjustment between the fence-post and the base thereof, so that the post may be accommodated to inclined or uneven ground and may also be thrown fiat upon the ground, so as to prevent damage by floods.

To this end the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing'from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present invention.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved fencepost, showing the same in tilted position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the guiding-sleeve for the adjustinglatch. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of the base.

Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the base of the post, which is provided at its lower end with upwardly-inclined spurs or wings 2, projecting outwardly from each side of the base and forming anchors therefor. The upper end of the base is provided with a laterally-enlarged head 3, which is provided with a transverse segmental rack at. This rack is preferably formed by means of a transverse shoulder 5, having notches 6 provided in the outer face and opening upward through the upper edge thereof and arranged upon an arc of a circle.

The fence-post 7 is preferably formed of wood of any desired shape and ispivoted at its lower end upon a pivot-bolt 8, passing transversely through the post and the base at a point below the head thereof. Fixedly post and the head of the base.

The lower end of the latter is adapted to engage with the notches 6 of the rack 4, so that the post may beheld at different tilted positions upon the base. Immediately above the latter and alined longitudinally therewith is a suitable stop-shoulder 13, against which the up per end of the latch is adapted to engage, thereby limiting the upward movement thereof and preventing longitudinal displacement and loss of the latch.

One edge of the post is provided with a plurality of transverse notches 14, which are adapted to receive the runner-wires 15, as plainly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. Provided upon one face of the post, alined vertically with the notches and intermediate of the opposite ends thereof, is a vertical series of staples or eyes 16, which are adapted to receive a key 17, preferably formed of a single length of wire, having its upper end bent into a hook or lateral head 18, which engages across the upper staple or eye, so as to prevent the key from dropping downward through the several staples or eyes. Thus it will be seen that the key engages transversely across the outer sides of the runner-wires, holding the latter against the back or rear face of the respective notches, thereby preventing lateral displacement of the runner wires and also holding the same firmly in position and pre venting lateral movement thereof.

It will be understood that the segmental rack may be provided with as many notches as desired, so as to obtain various degrees of inclination of the post, and the size and shape of the head of the base may also be changed.

What I claim is- In a fence-post, the combination with a base having a segmental rack, of a fence-post pivoted to the base and at one side of the rack, a sleeve fixed upon the post at a point adjacent to the rack, and having an offset cuff located upon the base side of the post, a slidmy own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
