TRIMMIING FOR BURlAL-CAS KET S'.
si n'dirioa'rxoiv forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,116, dated August 1 5, 189%).
I Application filed May 10, 1899. Serial No. 716,210. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,HARRY TAYLOR LooMIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trimmings for Burial-Oaskets, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the linings or trimmings of burial-caskets, and the object thereof is to provide an improved lining or trimming of this class with a pillow or pillowcushion attached thereto; and with this and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a lining or trimming which I employ, showing the pillow or pillow-cushion connected therewith; Fig. 2,- a top plan view of the burial-casket, with the lid removed and provided with my improved lining and pillow or pillow-cushion connected therewith; Fig. 3, asection on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a similar section showing a modification.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a trimming or lining 5 for the sides and head portions of burial-caskets,comprisingalongitudinal strip composed of a top portion 6 and bottom portion 7. The top portion 6 is fluted, crimped, smocked, or otherwise formed so as to give an ornamental appearance thereto, and the bottom portion 7 is plain, and said top and bottom portions may be composed of any desired material and are connected by a longitudinal strip 8.
Secured centrally to the longitudinal strip or lining, and preferably at or slightly above the connection of the top and bottom portions thereof,is a head cushion or pillow 9 ,composed of a central portion 10 and a border 11, fluted, crimped, or otherwise formed to correspond with the top portion 6 of the side and head lining. V
The inner end of thehead cushion or pillow is not provided with'the border 11, and the central portion 10 and the border 11 of the head cushion or pillow are connected by a strip 12, similar to the strip 8.
'In practice the longitudinal strip composed of the parts 6 and 7 is folded around the head of the casket, inside thereof and at the sides thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and said lining or trimming may or may not be extended around the foot of the casket.
The head cushion or pillow 9 may be formed into a pillow, as shown in Fig. 4, or it may have a separate pillow or cushion 13 placed thereunder, as shown in Fig. 3, and instead of securing the said head cushion or pillow to the lining in the first instance it may be secured in place after the lining or trimming has been placed in the casket by tacking it to said lining or trimming and to the head of the casket, as shown at 14 in Fig. 3. Bymeans of this construction the head cushion or pillow is securely held in place and is not permitted to slide out of position, which frequently occurs when said head cushion or pillow is not connected either with the lining or trimming or with the head of the casket.
The bottom portion 7 of the side and head lining of the casket is preferably cut out beneath the pillow, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the top portion 6 is also preferably provided with a backing 14, of any suitable material which serves to stiffen the same.
In practice the lining or trimming and the head cushion or pillow are preferably connected, as shown in Fig. 1, and the securing of the lining or trimming within the casket also secures the head cushion or pillow in position.
It will be understood that the bottom portionof the casket may be provided with the usual lining, and changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent 1. A lining for the head and sides of a burial-casket, comprising a longitudinal strip, and a head cushion, or pillow secured centrally to said longitudinal strip, substantially as shown and described.
2. A burial-casket provided with a side and a head lining, consisting of a longitudinal strip, and a head cushion, or pillow secured
