Description

@with gisten jlswt @mm JOHN E, TABER, 0F FALLA RIVER, lvIASSAGHUSETTS. Laim Patent NQ. 63,578, dared, am; 2,1867.
mesovsn sinn Tsai.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
` l Be it known that AI, JOHN E. TABER, of Fall River, lin the county of Bristol, and State of lidassaohnsette,`
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sink or Water Traps and I do hereby declare that the follow# ing is a full, clear', and exact description thereof.
The object of my invention is to providea safeguard' against the impnre air, vapors, and stenches which rise from sink-spente, cess-pools, or water-closets, and also te `prevent the evaporation of liquids where they are exposed to the atmosphere; and the. invention consists in forming a funnel-shaped valve composed of 4two or more pieces, which shall allowvliquids to pass throngh, but which shall ha closeihwhen it' is empty, eitherloy its own weight orgravity. A
vTo enable4 others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the acoompanyin1; drawinggforming a. part offthis' specieation, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents the trap open. l
Figure 2 represents it olcsed. They are both vertical 'sectionsfoff the trap as when it is in use. l Y
Figures 3 and 4 are top views of the trap, iig; 3 showing the holes by which it may be fastened to a Wooden?. ,bottom sink. The mark indicates the joint between" the twol pertionsof 'the valve B B.
Similar letters ofrefei'ence indicate like parts.
A is a taperingband or ring vzith a. broadlange or rim, C, around the top. This ange rests on the bottom of the sink or in the pipe, or in any position where Vit can be effective. lhe shape of A is indicated by dottedA lines in figs. 1 and 2. a represents paeling rings nnder the flange C; The valvqse'presented in the drawing in two pieces, is hung or suspended en pivots to A in suela' a manner thatV they'will close or come together by 'their ovm weight when empty. Being hung so that the parts-of the valve' are suspended from near the eentreL theilarger diameter of heupper portionef the funnel acts on a weight to throw the points together, as seen in iig. 2. The portions of the valve .B B'are formed teeny required taper, each being halfia funnel, and'whenclosed the joint forms a lineal: right angles with the top of the trap, but the flange C of the trap-may standl at any angl'epto suitioioumstanoes.
The design 4and operation is, that liquids and other substances which will pass through will force the valve open by their weight or` gravity and fall below, and that *when such 'liquids or substances leave the valve it will immediately close, preventing all gases and noxious eliuvia from ascending.
I do not confine myself to` forming the valve of two pieces only. It may be formed of more than twopieces and operate satisfactorily, but it would make more'joints, and I have foundtwo pieces to be sufleient; neither `do I confine myself to any particular use or application ofmy trap.. It maybe applied to creas-peels` and Water... elosets, as well as 'to common-sinks, and other,pui-poses,` or even. as a steam .trap to discharge the water,r of condensation from the steam cylinder. It can also be applied to an open vessel so as to admit volatile liquids but prevent their evaporation. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The valve consisting of the two equally divided jaws B, forming a cone, their joint being at right angles with the top oi the trap, pivoted at their upper inner en ds thereto, whereby they close by their own gravity, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
