UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CARL MARSCHUTZ AND HEINRICH MARSOHUTZ, OF NUREMBERG, GERMANY.
SPANNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 635,562, dated October 24, 1899. Application filed March 21, 1899I Serial No. 709,996. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that we, CARL MARSQHI'JTZ and HEINRICH lWIARsoHiiTz, subjects of the King of Bavaria, residing at Nuremberg, in the Kingdom of Bavaria and German Empire, have invented certain new and useful improvements in spanners for machines and devices of all kinds, particularly applicable for cycles and automotors, (for which we have applied for a patent in England, dated January 11, 1899, No. 716,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new spanner for machines and other devices, is particularly applicable for cycles and automotors, and is adapted to nuts and screw-heads of various sizes without alteration of the mouth of the spanner. Further, the spanner is constructed to fold intoa small compass; but when in use it has sufficient mechanical advantage and rigidity to do the work effectively. Therefore it answers especially the requirements for cycles and automotors; but when constructed of suitable proportions it is also useful for erecting machinery and in engineering work generally.
In order that this invention maybe the better understood, we now proceed to describe the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
Figures 1 and 2 are views of the spanner when folded to be put away. Figs. 3 and 4 show different positions of the spanner when in use.
The several arms or members a, which may be of any suitable shape and size of jaw or hole, are connected at one extremity, so as to pivot, by a bolt 0 or a rivet-screw or other device and a shoulder-piece b. For putting away, the arms or members a are folded toward one side, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. For use the members of the desired size of jaw or hole (a in the drawings) are turned through about one hundred and eighty degrees, as shown in Fig. 3. Thus the spanner has double the leverage of the separate members. The members not used for screwing serve as a convenient handle. I
The back of the shoulder-piece b is sufficiently broad to serve as a counter support to prevent the folding up of the extended spanner. If desired, the shoulder 61 of the piece 7) may be somewhat elongated and have a slot and a square or other hole to serve as a nozzlespanner and for similar purpose. Further, the spanner may be provided with a screwdriver f, Fig. 4. For use as a screw-driver several members a are extended, and the screw-driverf is turned so that it forms a right angle to the members a, the latter serving as a handle.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A spanner comprising a plurality of members, a bolt pivotally connecting the ends of said members and a clip having laterally-extending ears, said members fitting in between said ears and said bolt extending through the same, the intermediate part of said clip lying flat against the back edges of said members .on each side of the pivotal points to limit the movement of the members, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
