TIRE-BOLT WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,793, dated April 2'5, 1899.
Application filed October 22, 1898. Serial No. 694,296. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WALFRID LARsoN, of Kingsburg, in the coun ty of Fresno and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Tire-Bolt Vrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices to be used for tightening and loosening nuts upon bolts, and particularly nuts upon tire-bolts.
Theinvention consists of the novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is a plan and partial section of the wrench. Fig. 2is a view of the same at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail View of a spring employed in connection with the wrench.
My device is intended for use in connection with such work as the tightening and removing of tire-bolts where one end of the bolt may be engaged by one jaw of a pair of tongs to prevent the nut from rotating and the nut at the opposite end may be engaged by a wrench which may be rotated, so as to loosen or tighten the nut.
The device is mounted upon two levers A and B, which are pivoted to each other, so as to form a pair of tongs. One of these levers A has a single jaw A', through the outer end of which is threaded a bolt H, the said bolt being provided at one end with a thumb-piece or attened wing by which it may be turned and at the other end with a iiattened point 7L, similar to the end of a screw-driver, by which the end of the bolt may be engaged to prevent its turning. The jaw A', as well as the complementary jaws upon the lever B, is made of such a size as to embrace the rim of the -wheel and permit of the bolt H engaging with the tire-bolt. The lever B has jaws which are formed in two parts B' and B2, separated from each other and having a recess l), within which are mounted two`intermeshing pinions D and D'. The pinion D is secured upon a shaft E, which passes through both jaws B and Bgand also through a slot ain the jaw A', the slot being designed to accommodate the shaft as thelevers are swung upon their pivot. This shaft is provided With a crank F, so that it may be rotated, said crank having a bend F', by which it may conveniently pass the bolt H, and a handle I, the handle being secured by means of a nut I' upon its inner end, the bolt of the handle I passingthrough a slot f in the outer end of the crank. By this means the position of the handle I may be adjusted.
The pinion D is mounted upon a tube G by means of a keyway and a feather d, so
"that the tube may slide in but must rotate with the pinion. The ke'yway or slot stops short of the outer'end of the tube G, thus forming a stop which engages the outer end of the key or feather CZ, so as to prevent the two being forced too far inward or from accidentally falling out of the pinion. The inner end of the tube G is provided with a beveled outer surface G', which may be forced into the Wheel-rim, if necessary. This end of the tube may be provided with flat surfaces corresponding in number with the sides of the A nut which the tube is to fit, and the position of the nut may then be told at any time. The central bore G2 of the tube is shaped to correspond with the shape of the nut to be operated upon and is slightly tapered, the smaller end being that which is used as a wrench. The tube is free to turn in the jaws B' and B2 and serves as a shaft for the pinion D'. The opposite or outer end of the tube G is reduced in size, as shown at G3, to receive the end of a spring C. This spring is formed as a flat bar and is secured at one end to the jaw B2 by means of a clamping-screw C' and has its opposite end formed as a ring O2, adapted to surround the reduced portion G3 ofthe tube G and to engage the shoulder at the inner end of said reduced portion'. The spring is slightly bent, as clearly shown in Fig. l, so that the tension-thereof may be readily adjusted by turning the bolt C', which for convenience is provided witha flat head or thumb-piece.
Upon the jaw B2 is secured a receptacle J, adapted to receive the nut after it has been removed from the bolt. This receptacle is IOO secured to the jaw B2 by means of a screw J, which passes through a slot in one side of the receptacle and secures the latter in place, and the receptacle is provided with a notch to receive the reduced portion G3 of the tube G. passes through the tube G and drops into the receptacle J.
In using my device the jaws are made to embrace the rim of the wheel, and the bolt H is screwed down upon the head of t-he bolt, the cud of the socket-tube G being previously passed over the nut. Ou tightening the bolt ll the pressure comes upon the jaw B and not upon the tube G. By reason of this the pressure upon the bolt may be made greater than would be possible if the end of the tube G were relied upon for sustaining the back pressure. 'lhe tube G is held upon the nut by means of the spring C. lly reason of this construction the tube G is not forced into the wood more than is necessary to securely hold the nut, and marring of the wheel-rim is thus avoided.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A tire-bolt wrench, comprising two pivoted levers forming a pair of tongs, a sockettnbe mounted to turn and slide in one jaw,
means for turning the socket-tube, a flat spring secured to the outer side of the jaw and engaging the end of the socket-tube to hold it upon the nut, and an adjusting-bolt passing through the spring by which its tension may be adj usted.
A tire-bolt wrench, comprising two pivoted levers forming a pair of tongs, a sockettube mounted to turn and slide in one jaw a spring engaging said tube to hold it in engagement with the nut, a tension-adjusting screw for the spring, means for turning the socket-tube, an adjustable device carried by the other jaw of the tongs and engaging the bolt-head to hold it against rotation, and a cup or receptacle having its upper end placed to receive the nut from the rear end of the tube.

-L A tire-bolt wrench, comprising two pivoted levers forming a pair of tongs, one jaw having a pinion-receiving recess, two intermeshing pinions within said recess, a crank and shaft connected with one pinion,a sockettube forming the shaft of the other pinion and connected to rotate with the pinion and to slide in the jaw and pinion, a spring engaging the rear end of the socket-tube and a The nut when removed from the bolt.
