WINDOW-CLEANER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 2 5, dated August 1, 1899. Application filed July 13,1898. Serial No. $15,835. (N model.)

To all whom, it nuty concern.-

Be it known that I, JUDSON S. W'ERTS- BAUGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Cleaners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in window-cleaners wherein several pieces of coarsely-woven cloth are secured to a back of particular form; and the object of my improvement is to afford an implement for wash ing windows which will convey a quantity of cleansing fluid and act as a scrubber.

I attain my object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an end view, and Fig. 2 a plan showing the top of the back.

Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts in both views.

The back 1 is formed from a rectangular piece of sheet metal. Two parallel arches 2 2 are formed throughout the length of the back 1. A slight shelf 4 extends from the rear side, and the forward edge is upturned, as shown at 3, and is bent to receive and hold the rubber strip 14:. This bent portion is secured to the top of the forward arch 2 by means of solder. Suitable eyes 8 8 are similarly secured to the top of the back 1, in which the prongs of the handle 10 engage, respectively. The said handle is made 1101.-

low and is adapted to fit upon the tapered end of a pole or window-stick.

Strips of coarsely-woven cloth 6 6 are placed in the under sides of the arches 2 2 and se cured in place by half-round wooden strips 5 5 and screws 7 7, which pass through perforations in said back and are driven into said wooden strips, thus clamping said cloth between said back and wooden strips. The cloth 6 is folded so that the strips of cloth are double in thickness. The meeting edges of said cloth are held in place by the Wooden strips 5 5. The double edges of the cloth project loosely below both sides of the wooden strips and extend beyond the ends of the back 1.

WVhen the cleaner is submerged, the cloth becomes moistened and a quantity of fluid is retained between the loose folds. The cleaner thus charged is then passed over the windowglass. The moisture remaining upon the glass is then removed by passing the rubber strip 14E over the cleansed portion of the pane.

In a window-cleaner, the combination of a back having longitudinal arches; a number of folded strips of cloth secured in said arches in a manner whereby loose folded edges of said strips extend from the bottom of, and beyond the ends of said back; a rubber strip extending across the upper forward part of said back; and a hinged hollow handle for securing said cleaner to a pole, substantially as, and for the purpose specified.
