WILLIAM SANDERS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TOY PISTO L3 srncmcarron forming part of Letters Rated; M. eaasao, dated August 1, 189a 'Jlppilcetion filed September 27, 1898. Serisllo. 692,010. (No model) To all whom it may concern: J
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SANDERS, of
the city of St. Louis, Stateof Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Pistols, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying draw-' ings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to that class of toy pistols wherein a paper cap or the like is made use of to expel a small shot, which toy pistol is of the-variety known as breech-loading.
The object of my invention is to construct a toy pistol with a laterally-swinging breech block, which breech-block is constructed to receive both the explosive cap and the ball and my invention consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts I toy pistol.
with the side plate removed in order to dishereinafter shown, descr, ibed, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved Fig. 2'is a side elevation thereof close the interior mechanism ofthe pistol.
' Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the barrel and breech of the toy pistol. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken approximately on the line 4 40f Fig. 1.
In the construction of my improved pistol the handle 1, which is hollow, is provided in its upper end 2 with a'horizontal bore 3, the same extending through the barrel 4. The plate 5 is removably located upon the handle 1, which plate 5 is provided on its inner face with a depression. to correspond with the chamber in the hollow portion of the handle '1 and also with a horizontallyextending depression to correspond with the bore 3.
Formed in the" handle near where the barrel 4 joins with said handle is a transverse chamberS, which is normally occupied by the breech-block 7, the same being pivotally held at its lower end to the handle 1, said breechblock 7 being arranged to swing outwardly and downwardly, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4. Formed in the rear face of the'breech-block is a circular depression 8, and formed in the front face thereof is a recess 8, said depression and recess being connected by an angular aperture 9, preferably in the form of a cross. block ,is in its normal position, the recess 8 When the breechis in direct alinement with the bore 3, and opcrating longitudinally withinsaid bore 3 is a plunger 10, having a notch -11 formed inits under side, and integral with and projecting laterally from the rear end of said plungerlO is an arm 12, that operates through a slot 13-,
formed in the top of the handle 1. A suit able knob or projection 13*, having a milled edge, is formcd integral with the rear end of the arm 12. This plunger 10 and integral parts perform the functionof a ham'mer for the pistol. A U-shaped lea -spring 14'has one end seated in the handle 1, the free end I I being in engagement with the rear end of the plunger 10. The trigger 15 is fulcrumed in the lower portion of the body 2, said trigger 15 being provided with a hook 16 at its upper end, and a leaf-spring 17 is secured to said trigger 15 and acts to throw the hook 16 thereof upwardly into the bore 3.
The operation of loading and firing my improved toy pistol is as. follows: The plunger or hammer 10 is drawn to a half-cock or until the hook ldengages in the notch 11. This action withdraws the forward end of the plum ger 10 from the recess 8 in the breech-block 7, and said block 7 is now swung downwardly,
as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4. Apaper cap is now located in the depression 8,
and a small shot is located in the recess 8*,
after which the breech-block is swung upwardly into the chaniber 6. ger 10 is drawn to its limit of movement rearwardly until the hook- 16 engages the forward end of said plunger 10, and said pistol is ready Then the plun-' to be fired. When the trigger 15 is pressed,
the hook 16 is disengaged from the'forward ehd of the plunger 10, and said plunger is forced forwardly by the power stored in the spring 14, and when the forward end of said plunger strikes the cap in the chamber 6 said cap explodes and forcibly expels the shot 17. A toy pistol of my improved construction is simple and inexpensive, does not use powder, and is therefore comparatively harmless, as the paper caps, such as are used in the pistol, do not expel the shot with any great degree of force.
I claim- 1. In a toy pistol, a laterally-swinging IOO breech-block having recesses in its front and I rear faces to receive respectively a cap and a erating through the handle of the pistol, which projectile, the wall separating said recesses plunger strikes in the recess formed in the being perforated, substantially as specified. rear face of the breech-block, substantially as 2. A toy pistol, provided with a transverse specified. 5 chamber formed between the handle and the In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature 15 barrel, alaterally-swingingbreech-block pivin presence of two witnesses.
otally held in said chamber, said breech-block WILLIAM SANDERS. being provided with recesses in its front and Witnesses: rear faces, the wall between which recesses is EDWARD E. LONGAN,
1o perforated, and a spring-actuated plunger op- M. P. SMITH.
