DOOR-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,659, dated November 8, 1898. Application filed May 15, 1897. Serial No. 636,643. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, PHILIP BROWN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverstraw, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Door-Latch, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spring doorlatches, its object being to improve the construction of devices of this character, whereby they will be rendered positive in their action and in which the latch-lifting device will serve also as a handle for the door.
The invention consists in the several details of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of a door and its frame, looking from the inside, showing my improved latch in position. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking from the outside. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the latch, the door and door-casing being shown in section and the handles partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on the line 00 a: of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the escutcheon detached.
Similarreference-numerals indicate similar parts in the several figures.
1 indicates the door,-and 2 the door-frame. 3 indicates a bracket having a plate portion 4, which is provided with suitable countersunk holes for the reception of screws 5, by means of which it may be securely attached to the door. The bracket also has a hollow boss 6, which is integral with the plate portion 4, and this boss is provided with an overhanging lip 7.
8 indicates a plate provided with a series of perforated ears 9 for the reception of screws 10, by means of which the plate is firmly secured to the door. This plate is provided with a vertical slot 11 for the passage of the latch-lever, to be hereinafter more fully described, and with a loop or keeper 12.
13 indicates the latch, which is pivoted at its rear end in the holllow boss 6 on a pin or bolt 14, and this latch extends through the keeper 12 and is adapted to engage the catch 15. The catch is let into the side of the doorcasing and is provided with a lateral shoulder 15, which fits in a recess formed in the door casing and prevents any lateral strain upon the screws 16, by means of which the catch is secured to the door-casing. The screws are therefore much less liable to become loosened, and consequently, the catch will not get out of its proper position.
17 indicates a plate-spring which is secured to the under side of the overhanging lip 7by means of a bolt 18. I This spring is offset, as indicated at 19, in order to bring its free end over the latch 13, with which it engages. The latch is provided with a shouldered lip 20, projecting outwardly from its top edge, and this lip serves to prevent the free end of the spring from becoming disengaged from the latch.
21 indicates the escutcheon, which is adapted to be secured to the outer face of the door by means of screws 22 in the ordinary manner. This escutcheon is provided with aboss 23 on its inner face, and avertically-elongated slot 24 extends through the escutcheon and the boss. The door is provided with a recess 24 for the reception of the boss, and the Vertical slot 24 communicates with the vertical slot 11 in the plate 8.
26 indicates the latch-lever, which extends through the slots 24 and 11, beneath thelatch, and this lever is pivoted on a pin 27, which is secured in the boss 23.
28 indicates the outer handle, which isin tegral with the latch- lever 26, and 29 indicates the inner handle. This latter handle is provided with spaced ears 30, between which the reduced end 31 of the latch-lever 26 is fitted, and the spaced ears and reduced end are provided with alining openings which are threaded to receive the threaded bolt 32, by means of which the handle 29 is detachably secured to the latch-lever.
33 indicates a hook provided with a perforated boss 34, through which a screw or bolt 35 passes into the door and serves as a pivot on which the hook 33 can swing. The boss 34 is of sufficient thickness to cause the hook 33 to swing over the front face of the plate 8 into the keeper 12 to engage the latch 13, and thereby prevent the latch from being lifted by the latch-lever. The hook 33 is L-shaped, and when it is engaged with the latch, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, the short arm enters the keeper above the latch and the longer arm rests against the outer edge of the keeper. In this manner the door is eltectuallylocked against being opened from the outside.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have produced alatch which will, by means of the spring 17, be positively forced into engagement with the catch 15 whenever the door is closed, and also that the latchlifting devices serve as handles for the door.
It will be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is- 1. In a door-latch, the combination of a bracket adapted to be secured to the door and having an integral hollow boss, provided with an overhanging lip, a latch pivoted at one end in the hollow boss, a catch secured to the door-casing and adapted to be engaged by the free end of the latch, a spring secured at one end to the said overha'nginglip and engaging the upper edge of the door-latch, and a pivoted latch-lever loosely engaging the lower edge of the latch intermediate its ends, substantially as described.
2. In a door-latch, the combination of a bracket adapted to be secured to the door and having an integral hollow boss, provided with an overhanging lip, a latch pivoted at one end in the hollow boss and provided with a shouldered lip projecting fromits upper edge, a catch secured to the door-casing to be engaged by the free end of the latch, a spring secured at one end to the said overhanging lip and engaging the door-latch and said shouldered lip, and a pivoted latch lever loosely engaging the lower edge of the latch intermediate its ends, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a spring-actuated latch pivotally secured to the door, a catch secured to the door-casing to be engaged by the latch, a pivoted latch-lever, a handle integral with the outer end of the latch-lever, and a handle detachably connected to the inner end of the latch-lever, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a spring-actuate latch pivotally secured to the door, a catch secured to the door-casing to be engaged by the latch, a pivoted latch-lever having its inner end shouldered and reduced, a handle integral with the outer end of the latch-lever, a handle having spaced ears between which the reduced end of the latch-lever fits, said ears and reduced end having alining threaded openings, and a threaded bolt secured in said openings to lock the handle to the lever, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a plate designed to be secured to a door and provided with a vertical loop or guide 12, a pivoted latch disposed horizontally and passing through the loop or guide 12, and the L-shaped hook designed to be pivoted to the door at a point above the guide and provided with means for offsetting it from the door to arrange it in the same vertical plane as the loop or guide, said hook having its longer arm resting against one side of the loop or guide and engaging the upper edge of the latch to prevent the same from being lifted, the shorter arm of the hook being arranged within the loop or guide and interposed between the top of the same and the upper edge of the latch, substantially as described.
