EDI/VIN WVALKER, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CORKSCREW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,046, dated September 20, 1898. Application filed January 11, 1898. 7 Serial No. 666,290. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN WVALK'ER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corkscrews and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in corkscrews, and has for its objects the construction of a corkscrew with a removable handle which operates as a handle, one end of which is adapted to remove the wire from a cork, and also, when removed from the corkscrew-head, as-a cap for covering the point of the screw. These features are hereinafter fully set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved c'orkscrew with a portion of the head broken away, showing the connection of the removable handle therewith. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same in elevation, showing the handle in place as a cap over the point of the screw.
In the drawings illustrating my invention, A is the corkscrew, and B the head thereof, which is preferably made in the form of an oval plate, adapted to pass between the fingers of the operator and also adapted to receive advertising matter thereon when de sired. Through the upper portion of the head B there is a screw-threaded opening 1), adapted to receive the stem 0 of the corkscrew-handle. This stem 0 is made of a round bar of such size that it will pass up inside of the screw, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and is provided with a central screw-thread 0, adapted to engage the screw-threaded opening I) in the corkscrew-head B. One end of the handlestem 0 is provided with a point 0, adapted to be inserted under the wire securing a bottle-cork for removing the same.
On the opposite end of the stem 0 is secured a cap D, adapted to pass over the point and lower portion of the screw and cover the same, as illustrated in Fig. 2, this cap D being of such length that the inner end 01 thereof forms a shoulder which abuts against one side of the head B when the stem 0 is screwed therein, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In operation the stem Cof the handle being secured into place in the opening I) in the head B the corkscrew can then be used in the ordinary manner, the point 0 of the stem 0 being used to remove the wires from corks in the usual way. The stem can then be removed from the head B and placed within the screw, the cap D then covering the point of the screw A, as illustrated in Fig. 2, when the corkscrew can be carried in the pocket, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination in a corkscrew, of a spiral screw, ahead on the upper end of said screw having an opening therein, with a removable handle, comprising a stern adapted to pass up into the center of the screw, and a hollow sleeve-cap on one end of said stem adapted to cover the point of the screw, and also operating as a shoulder against one side of the corkscrew-head when the handle is in place therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in a corkscrew, of a spiral screw, a head on the upper end thereof having an opening therein a removable handle, comprising a stem adapted to enter the opening in the corkscrew-head, and a sleevecap on one end of said stem adapted to engage one 'side of the screw-head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix'iny signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN IVA'LKER.
