TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, GEORGE A. WELLS, of Oskaloosa', in the State of Ioiva, have invented a new and useful Lantern, Foot-Stove, and Heater combined; and I do lrerebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. sufficient to enable any one skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make use of it, referenceheing had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which my invcnticn'is represented by a vertical central section.
This apparatus admits of being used as a lantern, the flame being exposed to view through the panes of the lower chamber, the handle o'n top forming the means of holding it; or of beingused as a foot-stove by turning over the upper portion on its hinge and exposing the surface of the mat for the feet to restupou; or of being used as a heater for water, 820., by placing the pan in the necessary position in the lower chamber, with its bottom exposed to the-flame of the lamp below.
In the drawings, A is the lower chamber, having panes of glass, B, in its sides, and a lamp, C, at its base; the wick is raised and depressed as is usual, by a rod with a knurled head. I do not cite anything in the form or construction of the lamp as novel. Air-holes are provided in the upper part of this chamber for the escape of the disoxygenized air, and the lamp itself, which forms the base of the whole aflair, is hinged at F, so as to afford means of reaching it for the introduction of oil or spirits, of new wicks, and for the cleansing of the I lamp and chamber. A catch, G, retains the lamp in its closed position. Hinged at H to the lower chamber, is an upper chamber, I, which can be made to assume the position shown in the figure in dark lines, when the apparatus is .to be used as a lantern, the catch J maintaining the'relative position of the parts as they are carried by means of the handle K. i I
In the upper chamber- 1, except when required for heating water, &c., is a pan, L; when used as a means for heating water, the foot-plate'and mat M are removed, and .the heater set intothe lower chamber, as shown in the figure in red lines, over the lamp. When used as a foot-stove thepanL is in the upper chamber I, and thefoot-plate and mat M arespread out by means of the hinge m, 50- as to assume the appearance shown in red lines, the deflecting-plate N preventing the heat of the flame being too much concentrated in one spot.
I have described the apparatus under its three conditions,'as' a lantern, a foot-stove, and a heater, and-it" forms a compact and useful article, with capacity for great and various services. 7
Having described my invention, Ido not claim-a lantern and foot-warmer combined, but what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I claim the arrangement of the device forming a. foot-warmer, lantern, and water-heater, constructed and operating as described.
The above specification of my improved lantern, foot-warmer, and 'heater,.signed this 15th day of August, 1866.
