Letters Patient No. 60,269, dated December 4, 1866.
sPECiFIGATION.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: 4
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. SMITH, of Newark, in the county of EssexfandStateof'NewJersey, haye invented a. new and improved Friction Pulley or Coupling; and I do declare that thefollowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the aqoompanying drawings, and"to the-letters of reference I I i marked thereon. p i i l" To enable others skilled in the art to make and use. my invention, Iwill proceed to describe its construction and operation, p p 1 i i InFigure 1, of accompanying drawing, `A represents the rim of a pulley, the inside ofwhichisturned to a I I true surface. B represents a block secured to the shaft, C, by a `set-screw at D. E and E'f,representileversl, I'
held in position by and moving on axis of bolt F, which is connected to block B. -G represents a spring fastened ,l to block B and resting on levers E and E H represents a Wedge or ba'r, slshown at H in iig. `3, fastened 'l j into the sliding-block J, which slides loosely upon shaft C. I and I representIset-screws passing thro'ugh'; levers E and E, the points of which rest upon wedge H. y p I Figure 2 is a side view of the same, A representing' the rim of the pulley, `B the, block,D ,the` set-screwI p securing the same to the shaft C E and E" are the levers FA bolt; I set-,screw nthe lever E I:I represents the wedge. I I
The operation is as follows: When the sliding-block J is thrown out from the pulley, the spring Gforces n the levers E' and E inward, and the pulley A runs loosely upon the shaft. i But when the sliding-block J is n thrown in and the wedge H is driven between the set-screws I and I the levers E' `andE are forcedbutward, I
'i causing the extremities at K', K, K", and K to press powerfully against the inner rim of thepnlley, thus I* I making it fast upon the shaft C. I have shown and described the leversE and E" as being forced outward by means of a wedge. The saine e'ect rnaybe produced by a. cam working in the bleek D. p
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is` The combination of levers E and E, block B, sliding-block J, `wedge H, o'ryits equivalent, bolt F, andset- I i screws-I and I, for the purpose set forth. Y p
`CHARLES B. SMITH.
