SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 602,131 dated April 12, 1898. Application filed February 28, 1896. Serial No. 581,118. (No model.)

i To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT W. GOTTLOOK,

a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State r of New York, have invented "certain new and useful Improvements in Rules and Measuring-Sticks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to rules, measuringstioks, &c.; and the object thereof is to provide a combination device of this class which is adapted to serve as a spirit-level and which also may be used as a T-square; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction,combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of whichthe accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure l is a View of the ruler or measuring-stick, which consists of two parts hinged together, and showing also the T-square attachment and compass attachment connected with the outer end thereof. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the T-square attachment and points removed and the hinged parts in different positions in dotted lines; Fig. 3, a view showing the T-square attachment removed and the points in position, and Fig. 4 represents a detail of the construction.

In the practice of my invention I provide a rule or measuring-stick consisting of two parts A and B, which are hinged together at G in the usual manner, and pivotally connected with the part B is an arm D, which is provided at its free end with a hook d, which is adapted to engage with the pin or projection 61 secured to or formed on the part with which it is pivotally connected. The arm D is also provided about midway of its length with a notch or recess 01 which is adapted to engage with a corresponding lug or projection a, formed on the part A, when said part is held at an angle of forty-five degrees, as shown in Fig. 2, and the hook cl on the arm I) is adapted to engage with the lug or projection a on the part A when said partis held at an angle of ninety degrees, as shown in Fig. 2; 1

I also provide an ordinary spirit-level E, which is connected with the part A, and formed in the ends of each of the partsA and B are apertures or openings a adapted to receive steel points G, and each of said apertures or openings is provided with an oblong slot H, in each of which is placed a set-screw h and h by which the points G are adapted for use in drawing circles or laying out other forms, as will be readily understood by those familiar with this class of devices, and I'also provide means wherebya pencil may be connected with one of said points, consisting of a tube K, which is adapted to be mounted thereon and to which is secured a tube 7.2, which is adapted to receive a pencil k In Fig. 1 I have shown a T-square attachment which consists of an ordinary ruler L, to the sides of which is secured a plate or wing M, the free end of which consists of arms m, in which are formed holes or apertures which are adapted to receive set-screws h and h by which the T-square attachment is secured to the ends of the. parts A and B, and the use or application of this attachment will also be understood by all those familiar with this class of devices and without further explanation. The ruler L can be attached by the same set-screws as the. points G and without the removal of these points, so that either of them can be used at the same time.

My improved ruler or measuringstick is simple in construction and operation and perfectly'adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.

It will be understood that the part A, when held at an angle of forty-five degrees, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, is for use in miter-work and for similar purposes, and that when held at an angle of ninety degrees, as also shown in dotted lines in said figure, my improvement constitutes an ordinary square, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein'described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture a rule consisting of two parts which are hinged together, one of said parts being provided with an arm which is pivotally connected therewith and which is provided at the free end thereof with ahook,said hook being adapted to engage with a pin or projection formed on the said other part when the said parts are at a predetermined angle, said arm being provided centrally with a notch or recess, and the said other part being provided with alug or projection which is adapted to engage said recess when said parts are held at a second predetermined angle, one of said parts being provided with a spirit-level, andeach of said parts being with apertures, each of which is provided with a longitudinal slot, a set-screw mounted at provided at the free end thereof the inner end of each, steel points mounted in said apertures, and a pencil-holder pro vided with a pencil mounted on one of said points, said pencil-holder consisting of a tube adapted to engage one of said points and a supplemental tube secured thereto and adapted to hold a pencil, a T-square attachment mounted transversely of the outer end of said M
