SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,808, dated March 15, 1898.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES SINCLAIR, of Marquette, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stone-Working forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view showing the parts partly disconnected. Fig. 4 is a-view of the holding member. Figs. 5 and 6 are views of chisels of different forms.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a rod-like handle having a central longitudinal threaded bore a leading from its lower end and meeting at its upper end a transverse opening a. The lower end of handle a is formed with an annular shoulder a B is a clamping member the body portion of which is widened and provided with a central bore 1) and a recess 1), adapted to receive the annular shoulder a. This member is formed with a lower inverted-V-shaped recess b forming two rigid jaws b 0 is the tool-holder proper. It is composed of a head (1, corresponding in length to the clamp 13, and a central rod d, the upper portion d of which is exteriorly threaded to en-' gage with the threaded bore a, the smooth portion of said rod being designed to fit in the bore of the clamp B. The sides 01 of the head 01 are tapered to conform to the recess 1) of the clamp. In this head is an upwardlyextended slot 61 which runs the full length thereof. Within this slot is designed to be placed a chisel D, having upper and lower cutting edges 6 and central side fiangese. Against these flanges the lower ends of the Serial No. 646,879. (No model.)

In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a plain chisel, while in Fig. 6 is shown a chisel provided with teeth 6 In practice the chisel or cutting member is inserted into the slot 01 of the holder 1D, and the rod of the latter being passed through the coincident bores of the clamp and handle the latter is turned so as to draw the holder up into the clamp and to bind the latter firm against the lower end of said handle, any suitable rod being inserted through the transverse opening a to aid in screwing the parts together. As the holder is drawn into the recess between the rigid jaws b the jaws of said holder are forced to firmly grasp and bind the chisel. In this way the latter is securely held in place. To substitute one chisel for another or reverse edge for edge, it is only necessary to loosen the parts sufficient to release the holder D from the binding action of the rigid jaws of the clamp.
The advantages of my invention are apparent, and it will be specially observed that different styles of chisels or other cutting members can be readily and easily substituted one for the other. A tool-carrier thus constructed is extremely simple and inexpensive.
I claim as my invention- 1. The herein-described tool-carrier, comprising the handle-rod having a lower threaded bore, and a transverse opening intersecting the latter, a holder having an elongated head provided with a longitudinal slot and oppositely-tapering sides, a threaded rod projecting from said head and adapted to engage said bore, and an elongated clamping member interposed between said handle-rod and said holder and provided with a tapering slot forming two rigid jaws between which the tapering sides of said head are designed to fit, said clamping member also having a central bore through which said threaded rod is projected, whereby as said handle-rod draws said head, said clamping member will bind against the sides of the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described tool-carrier comprising the handle-rod having a lower threaded bore and a transverse hole or opening intersecting the latter, said handle-rod having its lower end provided with an annular reduced portion, a holder having an elongated tapered head provided with a longitudinal slot in its under side, a threaded rod extending from said head and adapted to enter said bore, and an elongated clamping member interposed between said handle-rod and said holder and provided With an annular recess adapted to receive the reduced portion of said handle-rod, the threaded rod of said head being extended through said clamping member,
