'.l() THE COMMISSIONER 'OF PATENTS Be it known that I, JOHN Srncnnn, of the city of Buffalo, and State, of New York, have invented n wlwnd useful improvement in Toy Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact desciiiption thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which#- Figure 1 is a'plan View of the edge of the wheel; and

My invention consists in the manner hereinafter described oi attaching the string to the thc bandilore In the drawings, A represents the groove cut in the circumference of the wheel, leaving a hub or axle, D, for the String F to 'wipe upon; G is the aperture .in the centre of the wheel, and B a small hole through the hub to this central opening for the passage'of the string. E is a block of India rubber or other elastic material, (preferably of the form shown in 'g. 2,) to which the string is attached by tying or otherwise, and then inserted in the opening, C.' It' desired, the ends of the rubber may be fastened to the wheel in any suitable manner, the string alone, however, being suicient to keep it in its place. H isa ring at the outer end of the vstring for the insertion of the linger, G, in operating the toy, which also serves as a stop to prevent the end of the string being drawn in the groove A in winding. The toy is operated in the usual manner, by rst winding the string around the hub D, in the groove A, andthen by letting go of 'the wheel the string unwiuds causing the wheel to revolve; the momentum which it acquires by the peculiar jerking motion given to the string causing it to alternately revolve in one direction, and then in 'the opposite. Asthe string becomes unwound, the strain upon the end attached to the rubber compresses it, when' its recoil or elasticity imparts a greater impetus to the wheel as its motion is being reversed, which increases the motion and attractiveness of thc toy.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Attaching the string F to theIndia-rubber or other elastic block E, in the manner and for the purpose described.
