Beit known that I, BENJAMIN Hannronrn, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Propellers Ag and I do hereby declare and makeknown that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof reference being had-to the accompanying drawings, and
My saidv invention consists in so arranging up'on a. reciprocating rodror shaft, placed longitudinally at the stern of a vessel, two analogous devices, that one of said devices shall operate to propel the vessel forward as the shaft is moved backward, the other device at the'same time being securely closed or arranged so as to offer but a triiing resistance; or, by a` simple-and ready adjustment, the last-mentioned device may be so arranged as to move the vessel backward when the shaft aforesaid Ihoves forward, the corresponding device at such times being arranged so asto present but a triiiing resistance in passing through the water. My invention further consists in a'novel arrangement whereby the propelling devices may bo'reversed, as aforesaid, by the pilot or such other person as may have charge of the matter, when desired.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe theesame with particularity, reference being made in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention.

`Similar letters of reference in the several figures, in the drawings aforesaid, denote the same parts of my said invention.
A represents a hollow shaft, supported in suitable bearings, u, and projecting centrally from the stern of the vessel, and having a reciprocating longitudinal sliding motion lgiven to-it by any suitable arrangement of the machinery of the engine. Near the rear end of said hollow shaft, there is fixed upon it a Haring bucket, marked B, opening rearward, which is provided with a movable valve, marked D, of rubber or any other suitable material, which may be opened-and closed, as hereinafter described. The said valve D is attached to the rear ced of the rod C, arranged within 'the aforesaid hollow shaft, as shown, by` means' of arms, ee, which pass through suitable longitudinal slots in the hollow shaft marked. c, as shown in the drawings, sothat, by sliding said rod within the shaft, the valve D may be closed, asA shown in iig. 2, or opened,-as shown in fig. 3, according as it may be desired to advance or back water, said reversal being effected as hereinafter set forth. At a. short distance in front of the aforesaid bucket B, there are hinged to the said hollow shaft, at g, a radial series of arms, marked m, which may lie down upon and parallell with the shaft, 'or open out like anumbrella, the opening being towards the front, `opposite the direction' of the opening of the bucket B. Upon these arms is arranged a suitable 'flexible covering, .forming a bucket, E, when. expanded, as shown in g. 3. F represents a ring secured to the rod by means of. the armsf, in such a manner as to compress the bucket E, and keep it from opening when the valve D is closed, but which slips off and releases saidbucket E when the valve .D is open. Upon the front end of the sliding-rod C is Ia pin, marked L, projecting up through a slot, d, in the shaft A, as shown. When it is desired to propel the vessel forward, the devices upon the shaft are arranged as shown in fig. 2, so that the backward thrust of the shaft and bucket B in the water will have the desired effect, while the water glides easily oif in the direction indicated by the arrows in said iig. 2, when the bucket is drawn back by the return stroke of the shaft. When it is desired to reverse the apparatus so as to back water, the stop M is let down into the position shown ng. 1, the stop L being raised simultaneously, so that the forward movement of the shaft will bring the pin L u'pon the slide C, against said stop M, so that while the shaft A goes on to complete its forward movement, the slide G and valve are checked, andthe valve thrown open, and the ring F moved ba'ck from the expansible bucket E, as shown in iig. 3. -'When the parts are in the' position last mentioned, the bucket E opens as the shaft A moyes forward, and thus produces the desired result, closing at v same manner readjusted in the positionl indicated-in iig. 2.

Having described the construction and operation of my invention, I will now proceed to specify what-I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Paten't-' p 1; I cla-im, in combination with the reciprocating shaft A, the buckets B and E, arranged andl operating substantially as herein described and for the pur-poses set forth.
2. I claim, in combination with the shaft A, and bucketsB E, the arrangement of the slide C, valve D, and ring F, substantially as and for the purposes described. i i
3. In combination with the above, I claim the arrangement of the alternating stops L M, operating substantially as and for the purposes shown and specified.
