IMPROVED BOAT-DETACHING APPARATUS.

Be it known that I, N. B. ALLEN, of Newport, in the county of Newport, and State of` Rhode Island, have invented a new and improved Device for Detaching Boats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled `in the art to make and use the saine,v reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.

The object of this invention is to provide a most simple and substantial device, whereby a boat can be safely launched under all circumstances, whether the shipA to which it is attached is underl full speed or not. I am aware that many devices have already been invented for the aforesaidpurpose, but they wereall too comp licated or not strong enough, and not convenient enough to handle. My invention consists in providing each one of two metal rods, which extend from the middlebf the boat to either end of the same, with va hook at their outer end. Byseeuringtheir inner en d to o ne lever, these bars or rods are by that lever always turned the same direction and manner. The tackles, which connect the boat with the davits, re secured to the boat by attaching them to the hook, by which they will be held as long as the point of the hook is turned down. As soon as a man amidship the boat turns the lever, the hook is turned up and both ends of the boat-are disengaged simultaneously from the tackles. This device is so simple that it cannot possibly get out of order; 'it works very satisfactorily, and is very easily attached to new boats as well as to old ones of whatever description. There are no springs or small traps torust or be disabled by long use. A boat which is provided with this apparatus can be conveniently laid up on the deck of a vessel, and, whenever it is needed, the apparatus will beready for service. a In the annexed drawing my invention is illustrated- Figure 1 representing a vertical longitudinal section oi a boat, which lis provided with my improved apparatus. Similar letters of reference indicate like parte.` v The bars or rods, A, which are made of anysuitable kind of metal, are securedto the bolt by staples a and journals b in such a manner that they can turn freely within said staples and boxes. The bars A are connested amidshipby a bifurcated lever, B, which is rmly secured to each bar, so that by turning the lever both bars are turned also. At the outer end of each bar, A, is arranged a hook, C, by which, when it is turned down, as in iig. 1, the boat is secured to the tackle. As soon as the bars A are revolved by means of `the lever, B, so that the hooks C point up, both .ends of the boat (or rather both hoo-ks) will be simultaneouslydisengaged from the tackle.- -If it should be found objectionable Ito let thebars A Arun diagonally alongside the centre of the boat, the said bars may be arranged as shown in fig. 3, where they are kept on the bottom .of the boat. Thel bar, D, in iig. 3, is provided with a pinion, which meshes into a pinion, F, on the barG'r. The latter is pro vided with the hook C. By revolving the bar D in the saine `manner as the bars A, the hook C will be turned and the same result will'be effected as is done by using the simple bars A.

The' hooks C, which are secured to the bars A, (or their equivalent DIL) andV which are operated by the lever B, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and'desoribed.
