To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CALVIN FRANCISCO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,

and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has reference to a novel construction of can-opening device comprising a cover forthe opened can, combined with a suitable. cutter or knife-blade and handle for turning said cover upon the closed end of the can 'tobring-tlie cutter or "knife in operative cutting engagement with the closed end ofv in a can-opening. device comprising a combined cover and a cutter or knife-blade secured thereto and also in the peculiar arrangements and combinations of the parts, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim. I

The invention isclearly illustrated in the accompanying sheet'of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my novel form of can-opening device; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical'section of the device, taken'centrally through its handle and the cutter or knife-blade, illustrating one means of securely attaching the same by means of the handle to the cover, said view also representing in vertical section a can with the knife or cutter inserted through the end of the same in the act of cutting said-end en-' tirely from the can. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on linem in said Fig. 2, illustrating the knife or cutter in end elevation; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cutter or knife before being secured in place.

In said. drawings, A indicates the complete can-opening device, comprising a main bodyplate a, formed with a downwardly-projecting annular rim a, which may be formed with an annular bead a for ornamentation, the whole forming a suitable cover, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Fig. 1. Secured upon the uppersur'face of said body plate a by means of pins orrivets b and b or in any other well-known mannen'is-a suit- "able handle 0, which may be provided with the legs 0 and 0 having the perforated holding or securing portions 0 and 0 through which said pins or rivets b and b are passed to firmly attach said handle to said cover, as will be clearly understood. It will, however, beevident that said handle maybe secured on said cover in any other well-known manner. As will be seen from Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, said holding or securing portion 0 is provided in its under surface with a groove or channel 0 formed by the edges 0 and 0 (see Fig. 3,) and arranged therein is a shank d, having a cutter or knife-blade d extending at a right angle therefrom. The said shank dis provided with a pair of perforations d and d said perforation (1 being adapted to receive the pin orrivet 12 while the perforation d is adapted to receive the pin or rivet b, and' whereby said shank d, which by the way has its cutter or knife-blade extending down through a slot or opening a in the body-plate a, and said end 0 of the handle are securely attached to said plate a, as willibe clearly evident from an inspection of said Figs. 1 and 2. From an inspection of said Fig; '3itw-ill be seen that thesaid channeled portion of the handle'c will securely hold the shank of the cutter or knife in its fixed position upon the upper surface a of the device A, and all possibility of the rivets or pins'becoming loose with the constant use of the device is thereby clearly avoided.

' To use the cutter in connection with the can, as 0, (see Fig. 2,) all that is necessary is to place the device upon the sealed end of the can in the manner of a cover and by a slight pressure drive the pointed portion (Z through the metal end 6" of the can. 13y turning the plate a upon said end of the can by means of its handle 0 the cutting edge (1 of the knife or cutter (Z will readily cut the metal, and said end can be entirely removed from the can, as will be clearly evident. lVhen said end 0 has been removed from the can, then said plate (t and its rim (0 are used in the ordinary manner of a cover on the top of the can 6 when the latter is not in use.

.liy my improvement I have devised a sin1- ple and eheaply-construeted can-opening device which can be used, first, for separating the sealed end from the body of the can, and, secondly, as a cover to the opened end of the can.

I am aware that certain changes may be made in the several arrangements and coinbinations of the parts without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not limit this invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several parts as herein shown and described.

llaving thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A can-opening device, combining therein, a cover and a handle having legs and provided with a cutter or knife on one of the legs thereof, extending downward and through said cover, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A can-opening device, combining therein, a cover, a handle, a cutter or knife, and means connected with said handle and said cutter or knife for securing said handle di rectly above said cutter or knife upon said cover, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

means connected with said handle and said cutter or knife for securing said. handle directly above said cutter or knife upon said cover, and said cutter consisting, essentially, of a shank (Z adapted to be secured upon the top of said cover and having a blade (1 extending downward and through said cover, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A can-opening device, combining therein, a cover, a handle 0, having a leg provided with a grooved or channeled end 0, a cutter or knife having a shank arranged in said grooved or channeled end of the handle, and means for attaching it to said cover, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. A can-opening device, combining there in, a cover, and a handle 0, having aleg provided with a grooved or channeled end c, a shank (Z of a cutter arranged in said grooved or channeled end having a. blade (Z extending downward and through said eover,and means, for securing said end 0 of the handle and said shank (Z to said cover, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. A can-opening device, combining therein, a cover, and a handle 0, having a leg provided with a grooved or channeled end 0', a shank (Z of a cutter arranged in said. grooved or channeled end having a blade (l' extending downward and through said cover, and means, for securing said end c of the handle and said shank d to said cover, consisting, of pins or rivets Z) and I} passed through perforatiens in said end c and the shank. (Z and the body portion of said cover, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
