Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEI'cE.
E. T. GREEN, on STONEHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IM PROVED LAST.
Specification forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 59,209, dated October 30, 1866 5 antedated October 20, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, E. THOMAS GREEN, .of Stoneham, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Last., and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature ot' my invention consists in making a last with a movable bottom, constructed in such a manner that when the said movable bottom shall have become worn out and rendered useless the same may be taken oit' and a new one substituted in its place, thus savin g the expense of an entire newlast.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and use.
Figure 1 is aphotographic view of the last complete. Fig. 2is aphotographicview ot' the last as it appears without the movable part. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 represent, severally, the three parts of the last as they appear when .separated.
The part F, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is made in the same manner as a common last, but differing in form, as seen by the representation. The bottom is made perfectly iiat to receive-'the part E. (Shown in Figs. I, 2, and 4.)
The part E is made of any suitable metal in general form, as shown, but, of course, to vary with the style wof the last, containing a socket, C, (shown i`n Figs. l and 2,) and a socket, I I. (Shown in Figs. 2 and 4.) The object of the socket (l is to admit ot' nailing on the inner sole while the shoe is in process of construction. The object of the socket I I' is to receive the movable bottom D. (Shown in Figs. l and 5.)
The part D (shown in Figs. 1 and 5) is made of wood, leather, rubber, or any other suitable material or materials, and tits the socket I I', Fi gs. 2 and 4, lling it and complet-ing the last.
rI he several parts D, E, and F are made fast to each other by screws or nails.
The uses of the several parts of my improved last are these: The part F, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, forms the body of the last. The part E, Figs. l, 2, and 4, completes the out-line ot' the last, and forms a permanent part ot' thc same. It also contines, with the aid of nails or screws, the movable part D, Figs. 1 and 5, in its proper position. The part D, Figs. 1 and 5, forms they movable bottom, to be taken out when it has become much dilapidated by use.
The advantage claimed for my improved last is that of economy, as it is well known that the bottom of a last is the only part that becomes unfit for use, and its renewalinstead of the renewal of the whole last is a great saving of expense.
I am aware that S. S. Turner obtained a patent for an improved last in the year 1858; but my invention is wholly distinct from the devices described and claimed in his said pat ent.
My invention consists in the usc of a metal-` E. T. GREEN.

WILLIAM EDsoN, N. M. LOWE.
