UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM S. LEMPERT, OF MARFA, TEXAS.
DEVICE FOR RAISING WATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,658, dated February 22, 1898.
Application filed February 9, 1897. Serial No. 822,609. (No model.)
To all whom it may conceive:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. LEMPERT, of Marta, in the county of Presidio and State of Texas, have invented a new and Im proved Device for Raising Vater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved device for raising water by use of a compressed fluid, such as air, the device being arranged to insure a continuous flow of water.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2 and showing a box with several compartments. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a transverse section of the air-chest. Fig. tis a sectional side elevation of the same; and Fig. 5 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement, showing a box with a single compartment and connected with a locomotive.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the well A contains a box B, completely submerged in the well-water and formed with a partition 13, so as to produce the compartments B 13 in the box B. The compartments are provided with water-inlet valves 0 and O and respectively adapted to swing inward and open when the pressure of the water outside the box is greater than that exerted within the compartment, so that the water from the well fills the corresponding compartment. 7
Into the top of each compartment opens an air-supply pipe D or D, provided with valves D D respectively, and connected with an air-chest E, arranged on an air-pipe F, connected with an air-compressor or other suitable device for forcing air through the said pipe F to the chest E. The latter is provided with a valve mechanism having valves E and E for permitting the compressed air to flow alternately to the pipes D and D, so that the air passes into the corresponding compartment B or B to press on the water contained in the filled compartment.
The valves E and E operate over ports a and b, respectively, connecting the chest E with the pipes D D, respectively, and the said valves are secured on a valve-stem E adapted to be turned by the operator or by an automatic device set according to the time required for filling and emptying the compartments B and B in the tank B. On the valve-stem E are secured vent-valves E E operating over ports a and d for connecting the ports a and l) and the pipes D and D, respectively, with vent-pipes E and E leading to the atmosphere. All the valves E, E E and E operate in unison and are so arranged that when the valves E and E are open the valves E and E are closed, and vice versa. The chest E is also provided with an air-outlet pipe F, normally closed by a suitable safety-valve F adapted to open on an excess of pressure in the chest.
The compartments B and B are provided with water-outlet pipes G and G, extending with their lower open ends within a short distance of the bottoms of the compartments, the said pipes being provided outside of the box B with check-valves H and H, respectively, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The pipes G and G are connected above the check-valves with a common discharge-pipe G extending out of the well to a suitable place of discharge, as indicated in Fig. 1. It is evident that the air-pressure in a filled compartment forces the water through the corresponding pipe G or G to the outlet-pipe G so that the water is raised and discharged.
\Vhen a compartment is nearly empty, the valve mechanism in the air-chest E closes the supply for the corresponding pipe D orD and connects with the other pipe D or D, so that the air now passes to the other compartment, which filled with water during the time the first compartment was emptying. The first compartment is now relieved of its air-pressure by the vent-pipe connecting with the airsupply pipe D or D, so that water can pass through the corresponding valves 0 or G into the compartment to again fill it from the well A. Thus while one compartment is filling the other is discharging its water, the arrangement for turning on and off the air being automatic and each pipe D or D serving as an air-escape to permit the compartment to fill with water when the supply of air is shut off from the corresponding pipe.
As illustrated in Fig. 5, the box B has but a single compartment and a valve 0 submerged in the water contained in the well A and self-closing, the same as the valves 0 0 previously mentioned, the valve 0 opening inward by the pressure of the water in the well whenever the pressure inside of the box in the well is removed, so that the box is filled with Water from the well.
Into the top of the box B opens an air-inlet pipe D adapted to be connected by a hose I with the air pump or reservoir of a locomotive or other machine or device to permit of forcing air under pressure into the said box B to press on the water therein to close the valve 0 and to force the water out through a water-discharge or stand pipe G extending to within a short distance of the bottom of the box 13 the same as the pipes G and G previously mentioned. The upper end of the pipe G is connected by a hose J with the water-tank of the locomotive, so that by the use of the train air-pressure water can be forced out of the box to fill the locomotive-tank. The pipe G is preferably provided in its lower portion with a check-valve G to prevent a return flow of the water in the upper part of the said pipe G It is evident that the device can be used for various otherpurposes besides the one mentioned and shown in Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A device for raising liquids, comprising a box having compartments, inlet-valves for the said compartments to permit water to flow into the compartments, water-discharge pipes leading from the compartments and having check-valves, air-supply pipes opening into the upper ends of the said compartments and provided with valves and an airchest provided with a chamber connected with a source of supply of compressed air, the said air-chest being also provided with chambers connected respectively with the said supply-pipes, and a valve mechanism for the said chest, consisting of a valve-stem mounted to turn in the said chest, valves carried by the said stem and arranged within the chamber connected with the source of supply of compressed air, the said valves operating over ports leading to the chambers connected with the air-supply pipes to permit the compressed air to flow alternately to the said air-supply pipes, and air-vent valves also carried by the said valve-stem and located within the chambers connected with the air-supply pipes, the said air-vent valves operating over ports connecting the said chambers with airvent pipes and allowing the air to escape from the said air-supply pipes alternately, substan tially as shown and described.

3. A device for raising liquids, comprising a closed box adapted to be submerged in water and having one or a plurality of waterinlet valves, a water-discharge pipe leading from the said box, an air-supply pipe opening into the top of said box, an air-chest provided with a chamber connected with a source of supply of compressed air, the said chamber having an air-outlet pipe normally closed by a safety-valve, the said air-chest being further provided with a second chamber connected with the said air-supply pipe, the said air-chest being provided with a port connecting the two chambers and also provided with a vent port leading from the said second chamber and a valve-stem mounted to turn in the said chest and provided with a valve located within the first-mentioned chamber, the said valve operating over the port leading to the said second chamber, and an air-vent Valve also carried by the said valve stem and located within the second chamber and operating over the vent-port leading from said chamber, substantially as shown and described.
