SPECIFICATION forming part-of Letters PatentNo. 599,598, dated February 22, 1898.

To a/ZZ whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY H. CoPPocK and FRANK W. MILLER, of Pleasant Hill, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented anew and Improved Churn,of which the following is a full,clear, and exact description.
This invention is a churn having a body or cream-receptacle with a horizontal rotary dasher-shaft. The parts have certain features of construction and relative arrangement by which a more effective structure is produced.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of our invention, while the claim defines the actual scope of the conception.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the invention Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the invention on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The body is supported on legs 4 and has a bottom 5 with four perpendicular sides 6, forming a square structure. The top 7 has a glass-covered observation-opening 8 and an inwardly-extending cleat 9, running into the body. Two opposite sides of the body have their upper edges located slightly above the upper edges of'the remaining two sides, soas to be engaged by the top 8 and hold the same, as indicated `in Fig. 1, thus leaving a space 10 between-the. top and the said remaining sides, through which air may circulate into the churn during the churning operation. The portions of the cleat 9 which are adjacent to the spaces'lOyare separated from the inner walls of the body, so as to leave spaces 11, forming continuations of the spaces 10.
The dasher-shaft l2 is held within the body parallel with the spaces 10 and 11, so that the revolution of the shaft will create a current of air passing through one space 10 and the companion space 11 into the churn-body and out of the same through the remaining spaces Fixed to the shaft 12 are a series of radial arms 13, respectively carrying dasher-blocks 14. The blocks 14 are arranged out of line on'the shaft 12, and the beveled portion a of each block throws the cream laterally against the following block, which causes a thorough agitation of the cream. The concave rear faces b of the blocks cause a vacuum behind each block, which draws the cream into the vacuum and further facilitates the thorough agitation of the cream.
One end of the shaft 12 is supported by a thumb-screw 15, operating in a bearing 16 and having its inner end seated in aconcavity in a cap 17, secured on the said end of the shaft 12. The opposite end of the shaft has a cap 18 with a square hole 19, receiving the squared inner end of a shaft 20, which is revolubly mounted in the body and carries a pinion 21. The shaft 2O is held by a block 22,
secured to the outer side of the body and hav! ing astub-shaft23, on which an internal spurgear 24 is revolubly mounted. The gear 24 has a handle 25, whereby the gear may be driven, and the gear 24 meshes with the gear 21 to turn the shaft 2O and consequently the shaft 12. l v
