WAVE- POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,118, dated January 11, 1898.
Application filed June 26, 1897. Serial No. 6421367. (No model.)
To all whom t Wwf/y con/cera:
Be it known that I, HENRY Lo'rzensnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wave-Powers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an improvement in wave-powers, and is formed of a series of paddles, beaters, dto., which are adapted to receive the force of the Wave and impart motion to suitable mechanism which carries the same to a desired point.
It further consists of details` of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents a plan view of a Wavemotion embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent views of detached portions thereof on an enlarged scale. Fig. e represents a part side elevation and part vertical sectional view of the device n an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a wave-power formed of the body portion or easing B, which may be of any desired shapeA and which may be formed so as to iioat or to be stationary, and is provided with the raceways C, at the mouth of each of which are the pulleys or rollers D. y
E designates shafts which are mounted on the body portion B by the standards F, saidI shafts being provided with the beveled gears G, which are secured thereto and which mesh with the bevelgears I-l, the same being movably supported upon the shafts J, which are suitably supported on the sides of the body portion B in a substantially vertical position by the plates K and L, the ends of said shafts J resting upon the plate M, and a collar N on said shafts prevents the upward movement thereof.
P designates arms which are keyed to the shafts J, as seen in Fig. 3, said arms being provided at one end withthe teeth Q and the other having pivotally secured thereto the pawls R, which are actuated by the springs S, said pawls R being adapted to engage the teeth T, which are mounted on the bevel-gears H, it being noted that the pawls R are held between the clips U on the said arms P and that the springs S bear against said pawls R and against the pins V on said arms P. Secured to said arms P near the teeth Q in any suitable manner (see Fig. 3) is a cord or connection W, which passes over the pulleys D and carries the weights A, which are adapted to move and to be guided in the raceways C.
B' designates arms which are rigidly secured to the shafts .l and carry the bars C', which are substantially parallel with said shafts J.
D' designates paddles, beaters, dsc., which are provided with collars E, which surround the shafts J and the bar C', said paddles being supported thereon and may be moved or adj usted upward or downward according to requirements, any suitable means for fastening the same at the desired point being employed, it being further noted that the said paddles E/ are of somewhat spoon shape by having the projection F on the outer edges and the projection G on the lower edge.
H' designates gears which are suitably mounted on the said shafts E and are adapted to engage with the bevel-gears J', which are carried by the shaft K', which is supported on the casing B by the standard L', said shaft K' carrying the gear M, which is adapted to mesh with a gear N', mounted on the shaft P, which carries the pulley Q', whereby the power may be carried or imparted to any desired point.
Rf designates a rod or bar which is movably supported on the casing or body portion B, which is pivotally connected with the handle S', `which is guided by the standard T, mounted on the said casing B.
U designates pawls which are suitably mounted on said casing and one end of which is adapted to be engaged by pins V' on said bar or rod R' and are provided with springs f', which are adapted to normally hold said pawls in the path of the teeth Q on the arm P, said handles S' being adapted to be locked by a pin A2 in order to hold said pawls out of the path of said teeth Q.
Y The operation is as follows: The parts are normally in position as seen in Fig. l, and the arm P and bar R are in position as seen in full lines, Fig. 2. Since the operation of one beater is the same as all, only one will be described. A wave in striking the paddle,
lI oo beater, rbc., moves the same in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. l-that is, toward the casingand as the paddle is secured to the shaft J it turns the same, and with it the arm P, which is also secured to said shaft J. This causes the pawl R on the arm P to engage with the teeth T of the gear I-I and turn the same (the parts assuming the position seen in dotted lines, Fig. 2) and raises the weight A', which is attached to the arm P. The gear G, meshing with the gear H, is turned thereby, and with it the shaft E, which carries with it the gear H', which imparts motion to the gear J and thereby to the shaft K', and as the gear M' is rigidly secured to said shaft K' it is also turned and imparts motion to the gear N', which is mounted on the shaft K', which carries the pulley Q', and thus the power is carried to any desired point. As soon as the force of the Wave is past the Weight A' will descend and cause the arm P to assume its normal condition, and the paddle will also be returned, since the motion is imparted to the shaft J by the said weight, it being noticed that since the gear H is movably supported upon the shaft J the same will not be turned in the return motion of the said shaft, but the arm P and pawl R, together with the shaft J and paddle D', are returned to their normal position without affecting the various parts, it being further noticed that any one of the paddles may be operated without disturbing the other, so that as the Wave proceeds in its course it will strike one paddle after the other and operate the same, and after it has passed each successive paddle the same will be returned to the normal position at once and Will be ready for the next operation.
If for any reason,s uch as repairing the parts or for replacing the same, it is desired to hold one or more of the paddles out of operation, the same can be accomplished by unlocking the handle S', when the springs WV' Will cause the pawls U' to move in the path of the teeth Q of the arm P, so that when the arm P is movable to the position seen in Fig. 3 the said paWls Q' will engage said teeth T and prevent the return of said arms, and thus the same cannot be operated. After the parts have been fixed or if it is desired to have the paddles in operation the handle is again locked in position and the pawls U' will be removed from the path of the teeth Q and allow the parts to be moved.
While I have shown a certain form of the present construction, I do not desire to be limited in every instance to what is exactly described, but desire to make such changes as may come within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A casing, shafts journaled on the sides thereof and provided with paddles connected therewith and extending therefrom, an arm rigidly connected with each of said shafts, a shaft mounted on said casing and having gearing thereon meshing with gearing loosely mounted on said paddle-shafts, each of said arms having a pawl and ratchet connected with said loosely-mounted gearing and separate means for returning each of said paddles to its forward position.
2. In a Wave-power, a casing, a paddle having its shaft With a gear-wheel meshing with a gear-Wheel loosely mounted on the paddleshaft, an arm on said paddle-shaft, pawl-andratchet connection for said arm and said loosely-mounted gearing, a weight for returning said arm and paddle, and a locking-bar with pawl for said arm.
3. In a Wave-power, a body portion, a shaft suitably mounted thereon, a paddle carried by said shaft, an arm on said shaft, a weight attached to said arm, a gear movably mounted on said shaft, a pawl on said arm adapted to engage said gear, a second shaft mounted on said body portion, a gear thereon adapted to mesh with said first-mentioned gear and means for imparting power to any desired point.
4. In a wave-power, abody portion, a shaft mounted thereon, a paddle secured to said shaft, an arm attached to said shaft, a gear movably mounted on said shaft, a weight on said arm, a pawl thereon adapted to engage said gear, a second shaft mounted on said body portion, a gear on said shaft meshing With saidf first-mentioned gear and a third shaft, which is adapted to be operated by the second-mentioned shaft.
5. In a wave-power, shafts mounted thereon, paddles on said shafts, gears movably mounted on said shafts, arms attached to said shafts, spring-actuated pawls carried by said arms and .adapted to engage said gears, Weights secured to said arms and movable in said body portion, shafts mounted on standards on said casing, gears carried by said shafts and adapted to mesh with the firstmentioned gears and means forimparting motion to another shaft.
6. In a wave-power, shafts mounted thereon, paddles on said shafts, gears movably mounted on said shafts, arms attached to said shafts, spring-actuated pawls carried by said arms and adapted to engage said gears, weights secured to said arms, shafts mounted on standards on said casing, gears carried by said shafts and adapted to mesh with the firstmentioned gears, means for imparting motion to another shaft, and means for locking said arms.
