UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER SWANGER, OF WVASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
PROCESS OF MAKING METAL TUBES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,583, dated December 8, 1896.
v Application filed December 5, 1895. Serial No. 571,101. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER SWANGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Washington, in the county of \Vashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iron and Steel Skelps for Making Pipe and Tubes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a certain new and useful process of making tubes, pipe, and the like, and has for its object the provision of new and novel means whereby a better weld is obtained in the pipe than by the ordinary method and at the same time preserving the desired gage of the pipe or tube during the process of forming and welding.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel means which will allow of the material being rolled to a lighter gage and still retain the gage desired than has previously been possible; furthermore, the securing of a uniform gage throughout of the pipe or tube.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of novel means whereby the material being rolled, by reason of the peculiar construction of the metal, is much more easily retained in position than by the ordinary method.
With the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction and arrangement to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the different views of the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a set of ordinary rolls. Fig. 2 is an end view of the plate forming the tube or pipe. Fig. 3 is an end view of the tube or pipe, showing manner of overlapping the edges.
In the drawings, A represents the housing supporting the rolls B by the shafts or arms 0 O. This construction is designed to show in a crude form the ordinary construction of a set of rolls, as no improvement is claimed on the rolls.
The plate forming the tube or pipe is represented by the reference-letter D and is constructed slightly inclined on one side from the edge to the center, thereby forming a greater thickness at this point, as indicated at E. The weld is shown at F.
Operation: When the skelp 'iron or steel which is usually used for this purpose is passed into the rolls in the ordinary manner, it will be noted that the heavy portion E of the skelp iron or steel D will prevent the drawing of the pipe or tube at this point to a lighter gage than the balance of the tube or pipe while the weld is being made, as has heretofore been the case. The edges being of a less diameter than the center will also serve to form a uniform thickness when welded together, as will be readily apparent.
By this construction of the skelp iron or steel a much heavier draw is obtainable on the metal, insuring a better and smoother weld without danger of destroying the uniform thickness of the tube or pipe.
In carrying out my process I employ a skelp as above formed. The edges of the skelp are heated to a welding-point, overlapped, and welded to produce a tube of uniform thickness.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The process for making metal tubes, which consists in producing a blank thicker at its transverse center than at its edges and gradually tapering in thickness from its center to its edges, bending said blank into tubular form with its edges overlapping, heating and welding the edges and then reducing the walls of the tube to uniform thickness, for the purpose described.
In'testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
