UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIBAM lNMAN, OF HAGAMANS MILLS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LATHES FOR TURNING WAGON-HUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,145, dated August 14, 1866.
To all 'whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that HIRAM INMAN, of Hagamans Mills, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Turning Hubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line .r m, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.

This invention relates to a new and improved machine for turning hubs, whereby the work may be rapidly and perfectly performed, effecting a great saving both in time and labor.
A represents a horizontal frame, on which two fixed heads, B B', are secured, having horizontal arbors C C' fitted in them.
The arbor G of the head B has a cone of pulleys D upon it and a toothed wheel, E, the latter having a pinion, F, gearing into it, which pinion is on a shaft, G, one bearing of which isin apost, H, on the frame A, and the other in a lever, I. 0n the shaft G there is also placed a pulley, J.
The arbor C' of the head B' is simply a sliding` one, and it is secured in position by a clamp, K.
L is a carriage, which is fitted ou the frame A between the two heads B B', and is moved back and forth in a direction at right angles with the arbors C C' by means of a rack, a, on the carriage and a pinion, b, on the lower end of a vertical shaft, M, the upper end of the latter being provided with a crank, c, for the convenience of turning it. This carriage has an upright frame, N, on one end of it, and to the top of horizontal bar d of said frame there are attached two cutters, e e, in such a manner that they may be adjusted laterally. On the opposite end of the carriage L there are two uprights, ff, between which a rotary shaft, O, is fitted, said shaft having two cutters, P P, attached to it.
The portion of the device above described is for roughing oif the blocks, cutting them in cylindrical form and of the proper length. The blocks Q are centered, one at a time, between the arbors C U', the block being rotated by the arbor C, motion to which is given from the shaft G, through the medium ofthe gearing E F; or the motion may be given directly to said shaft by a belt passing around one of the pulleys D. At first, when the block is being roughed off, the arbor C is rotated from shaft G, as a slow motion is required, the shaft O being rotated with a uniform speed or with the same speed at all times. .After the block is roughed oif the pinion F is thrown out of gear with wheel E, and the quick movement given the block untilit is turned or out in cylindrical form and of the proper diameter, the carriage L being moved in the direction indicated by arrow l, in order-to feed the cutters P to their work. After the block is thus cut or turned the carriage L is moved in areverse direction, as indicated by arrow 2, and the cutters e e cut the ends of the block, so as to make it of the proper or desired length.
The cutter-shaft 0, shaft G, and arbor (l are all rotated from a counter-shaft over the machine.
R R' are two fixed heads on the frame A, in which arbors S S' are fitted, the arbor S in the head R being a rotating one. The turned block is fitted between the arbors S S', and is rotated from the arbor S.
T is a carriage tted on ways or guides g g on the frame A, between the heads lt R', and moved back and forth by a screw-rod, U, working in a nut, h, and the ways or guides g g are connected at their ends to form a frame, and this frame is adjusted laterally by a screwrod, V, working in a nut, t'.
On the top of the carriage T there is attached a cutter, W, of the form corresponding to that designed to be given the hub, and the two curved bars or stops jj are attached to the carriage to limit the depth of the cut of cutter W. The cutter W is adjusted laterally to the desired position by turning the screwv rod V, and motion being given the block the cutter W is moved toward its work by turning the screw-rod and the hub is turned.
