Description

(No Model.)
R. G. BIDWELL.
BOTTLE.
Patented Nov. 10, 1896.
INVENTOH WITNESS:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT GIBBENS BIDIVELL, OF ORLANDO, FLORIDA.
BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,035, dated November 10, 1896. Application filed April 10, 1896. Serial No. 586,902. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT GIBBENS BID- WELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orlando, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars,
and similar vessels, andthe object thereof is to provide a vessel of this class which, havin g been once filled, cannot be emptied of its contents without leaving evidence of the fact.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the upper part of a bottle and the neck thereof, which is formed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the plug or stopper inserted into the neck, and Fig. 3 a transverse section on the line 3 3.
In'the drawings forming part of this specification, A represents the upper part of a bottle having a neck a, in the sides of which are formed cavities or chambers a the bottoms of which are very thin, and secured to the inner sides of the bottoms of these cavities or chambers a are downwardly directed prongs or projections B, which are composed of annealed glass, which are formed thereon or secured thereto in any desired manner.
In this class of devices the bottle or vessel must first be filled before the plug orstopper is applied, and the bottle A, having been filled, a plug or stopper 0, which is adapted to closely fit the inner walls of the neck, is forced thereinto in the usual manner. In this operation the prongs or projections B are cut into the side of the stopper, but are not broken ofi, and when it is desired to empty the bottle said plug or stopper is withdrawn by means of a corkscrew or other device, and in this operation the prongs or projections B are forced outwardly and broken off and the bottom of the cavities or chambers a which are very thin, are also broken out, thus leaving evidence of the fact that the bottle or.
vessel has once been filled and emptied.
The cavities or chambers a may be made of any desired size, and I may place thereover, by means of labels or other devices, a trade-mark or the name of the manufacturer or proprietorof the contents of the bottle, and I may place on said neck or on the bottle or vessel, in any desired location, a description of the construction of the bottle and the object thereof.
This improvement does not add materially to the cost of the bottle or vessel and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and my invention is not limited to the location of the cavities or chambers a or to other details of the construction, and I reserve the right to make all such changes in and modifications of the construction herein described as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A bottle'or other vessel provided with a neck, in the side walls of which are formed cavities or chambers the bottoms of which are thin, said neck being also provided on its inner walls with inwardly and downwardly directed prongs or projections which are secured to the bottoms of said cavities or chambers, substantially as shown and described.
2. A bottle or other vessel provided with a neck, in the side walls of which are formed cavities or chambers the bottoms of which are thin, said neck being also provided on its inner walls with inwardly and downwardly directed prongs or projections which are secured to the bottoms of said cavities or chambers, and which are adapted to enter a plug or stopper when inserted into the neck, and by means of which the bottoms of said cavities or chambers are broken out when the plug or stopper is withdrawn, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 31st day of March, 1896.
ROBERT GIBBENS BIDWELL.
