i L. RSMITH. SPOOL HOLDER FOR SEWING MACHINES. No. 571,024. Patented'NoV. 18916.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS E. SMITH, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
SPOOL-HOLDER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,024, dated November 10, 1896.
i Application filed J' anuary 17, 1896. Serial No. 576,361. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS F.. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool-Holders for Sewing- Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part line xx, Fig. 2.
of this specification.
My invention relates to spool-holders for sewing-machines, and has for its object the prevention of the thread unwinding more rapidly than the machine-needle takes it up, and becoming entangled with the spool-pin or other parts of the machine and broken.
- By my device a uniform friction is had sufficient to accomplish above results, and at the same time time it does away with the use of thread-unwinders, tensions, and threadguides, as in all methods, so far as I am aware, hitherto employed in devices of this kind for preventing the thread of a sewing-machine from unwinding too rapidly, catching, and breaking. These objects I accomplish by the use of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and the invention consists in certain novel features of the same, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawings just referred to, Figure l is a perspective view of machine with device in place. Fig. 2 is aplan view of device, spool being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a section on Fig. et is a section on line y y, Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is an end view of device.
In each of the figures same letters are employed to designate same parts.
My device consists of a base-piece C, drilled to fit over the spool-pin A of a sewing-machine A, to which it is attached by set-screw F. The said base-piece is provided in the end opposite the spool-pin opening With a bearing at a right angle thereto, in which is mounted mandrel D, adapted to carry the spool, whereby the spool is permitted to rest horizontally upon the arm of the sewing-machine, as shown in Fig. 2. The said bearing is fitted in the end opposite mandrel D by rivet G, as shown in Fig. 4.
In carrying out my invention I secure the spool-holder firmly to the spool-pin in the position desired by means of set-screw F, and the spool of thread is placed over mandrel D, as shown in Fig. 2. The spool is held firmly in place by the angular shape of mandrel D. In the operation of the sewing-machine the spool revolves, and with it the mandrel on its bearing. The mandrel is suficiently loose to revolve freely.
In my drawings I have shown the mandrel to be square, but it may obviouslyhave more or even less than four sides, the operation being the same. The square is preferred.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The base-piece provided with an opening for the reception of a spool-pin of a sewingmachine, provided With the thumb-screw F, the said base-piece being provided in the end opposite the spool-pin opening with a bearing at a right angle thereto in which is mounted the mandrel D, adapted to carry the spool whereby the spool is permitted to rest horizontally upon the arm of the sewing-machine, substantially as specified.
LOUIS E. SMITH.
