SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,527, dated February 23, 1897. Application filed September 12, 1896. Serial No. 605,577. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEYMOUR C. HULBERT, of the village of Geneva, county of Ontario,
and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dampers for Stove-Doors, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to dampers such as are placed in the doors of stoves and ranges, and more particularly to that class of them which, when closed, rest on a seat as distinguished from that class of dampers which are arranged to slide back and forth across draftpassages arranged on the door.
In carrying out my invention draft-passages are formed in the door, and back of the latter, so as to straddle the dampered openings, there is arranged abridge with a damperdisk arranged between the bridge and the door, so as to overlap the draft-passages at their edges andto seat thereon when closed. To operate the damper-disk to move outwardly to close and inwardly to open, a bolt is used, which latter at its inner end makes a swivel connection with the bridge and at its outer end journals in the door, and intermediately between' the bridge and the door this bolt makes a threaded connection with the disk, whereby as said bolt is turned by an operating-handle upon its outer end the disk is operated to move inwardly to open or outwardly to close the draft-passages, with the disk when moved outwardly to close the draft-passages seating onl the edge of the latter.
Accompanying this specification to form a part of it there are two sheets of drawings containing eight iigures illustrating my invention, with the same designation of parts by letter-reference used in all of them.
Of the illustrations, Figure lis a front elevation of a stove-door containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a central section taken on the line of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective of one of the damper disks or plates shown as detached. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line x2 002 of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the rear side of a stove-door having my im# proved damper attached thereto. Fig. 6 is a plan view of one of the damper-bridges. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 8
is a side elevation of the threaded damperbolt shown as detached.
The several parts of the stove-door and damper thus illustrated are designated by letter-reference, andthe function of the parts is described as follows:
The letter D designates the stove-door made with the dampered openings O O O O, of which there is a series for each damper disk or plate at each end of the door. These draft-openings are formed in the door by means of interveningwebs w, which radially connect the door with the centrally-located journal part J.
The letter R designates a ring formed on the rear face of the door surrounding the damper-openings, on which ring the damper disks or plates of each of the dampers shown rest when closed.
The letters d2 d2 designate the damperdisks, of which there is one for each damper shown, and these disks at each of their diametrically opposite sides are provided with outwardly-projecting points g g', each two of which latter form a guideway g2 at each side of the disk.
The letter p2 designates a threaded passage formed centrallyin each of the damper-disks.
The letter B designates a bridge which at its ends is provided with ears e for attachment to the inner face of the door, and between where thus attached each of these bridges is angularly extended rearwardly to connect with a horizontal part b`-, which straddles the damper-opening in each damper, with the outer ends of the bridges in each damper arranged within the guide-passage g2.
The letter p3 designates a bolt or damperrod passage formed in the bridge.
The letter I designates the damper-rods, of which there is one for each of the dampers shown, and they are each provided with a handle II at its outer end and a collar O, encircling the rod I, where adjacent to the passage of the damper-rod through the door. This rod I passes loosely thro n gh the door and bridge to be secured as thus placed by means of a nut N, arranged upon the damper-rod where passing through the bridge, and where passing through the damper-disk in each damper the rod I is threaded into the damperdisk, so that the latter will be moved inwardly to open and outwardly to close as this damperrod I is oppositely operated to turn by the movement of its handle H. With the bridge within the guides g2 the damper-disk is guided in its outward and inward movement as aetuated bythe damper-rod and prevented from turning.
W hile I have shown two dampers, both constructed alike and as applied to one door, a single one may be used and wh ile I have shown four damper-openings formed in the door for each damper a greater or less number may be employed, and they may have differing forms than those shown, provided they are arranged to be operated in substantially the same way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a stove-door having damper-openin gs made therein,of a bridge connected to the inner face of the door, and at its ends projected rearwardly from the latter so as to straddle said openings a damper disk o1` plate arranged. between said door and bridge, and provided with guides at each side to receive the inturned ends of the bridge; and a damper rod or bolt arranged to pass loosely through said door and bridge and where projecting beyond the latter provided with a nut, and at its outer end with a handle, and threaded into the intermediately-placed disk or plate, constructed and arranged to be operated substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a damper for stoves the combination with a door provided with damper-passages, and a centrally-located boltpassage, of a bridge which at each of its ends connects with the door at each side of the damper-openin gs, and is therefrom projected rearwardly from its attached ends to straddle the damperpassages; a damper plate or disk arranged between the bridge and door, and having guides at each of its side edges to receive the bridge and a damper bolt or rod arranged to loosely pass through said journal-passage in the door and bridge, and to make a threaded connection with the dampcr-disk, and provided with ahandle at its outer end, and a collar between where passing through the door and the handle, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
