SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,073, dated Tune 16, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. FOOTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulleys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to pulleywheels, more particularly such as are classed in household hardware for use for window-sashes and the like uses, and the purpose of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and durable pulley-sheave which can be readily and easily manufactured out of sheet metal and at a .very small cost.
It consists of certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more particularly pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of the sheave-rim. Fig. 2 is a similar section of one of the shells or disks from which one of the sheave-faces is formed. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the other disk. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section of the pulley complete. Fig. 5 is a side view of same, and Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal section of a modified form of the pulley.
In constructing my improved pulley the rim A is first spun or otherwise formed out of sheet metal, the periphery being concave, as shown at a, to form the groove for the pulleycord, and the edges of the rim being recurved, as at b b. Two disks B C are also stamped or spun out of sheet metal, with an opening 0 at the center and with the central portions of the disks preferably curved back on themselves, as shown at d d.
these disks is such that they will fit loosely under the recurved edges Z; of the rim A, and the disks being thus placed with their convex surfaces outward pressure is brought to bear on the two disks to flatten them out parallel with each other. In order to obtain a The diameter of uniform bend of the two disks, I find it expedient to form the disks with a bend g 9 about midway between the periphery and central opening. With this intermediate bend the shells will readily flatten out, as shown in Fig. 4:. The flattening out of the disks of course increases their diameter and the two faces of the pulley are thus firmly locked within the rim. The core Dis then adjusted at the center of the sheave in a suitable mold or form and Babbitt metal 0 is then filled in around the center to form a bushing for the pulley. The recurved portions (1 of the pulley faces being thus embedded in the Babbitt metal hold the bushing securely in place. In some cases for a cheaper grade of pulley I dispense with the Babbitt-metal bushing, and in that case the disks are merely curved at the center, as shown at f, Fig. 6, to form the pivot-opening for the sheave.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a pulley, the combination, with a rim having its outer edges rolled over to form a lock, of a pair of disks expanded and flattened out under the recurved edges of the rim to form the side walls of the sheave, said disks being cut away at the center and having their inner edges recurved with metal bushings held thereby,with bend intermediate said central portion and the periphery, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a pulley, the combination, with a rim having its outer edges rolled over to form a lock, of a pair of disks expanded and flattened out under the recurved edges of the rim to form the side walls of the sheave, said disks being cut away at the center and curved inward and being provided with bends intermediate said central curved portion and the periphery, substantially as shown and described.
