BOX COVER BRAGE 0B SUPPORT. No. 569.193. Patentad 0.01:.13, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
MEL B. GEORG, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR 0E oNE-IIALE To. WILLIAM H. SIEHR, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX-COVER BRACE OR SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,193, dated October 13, 1896.
Application filed June 6, 1896. Serial No. 594,498. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL R. GEORG, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box- Cover Braces or Supports, of which thefollowing is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in box-cover braces or supports.
The device is adapted for supporting the cover of any form of box, although it is particularly intended for supporting cigar-box covers, it being used to great advantage in that connection. In placing cigar-boxesrin a case if the lid is thrown open the space occupied by the lid in its open position represents so much lost room. It is therefore a desideratum to support the cover in an upright position in order to economize space.
My invention has in view the above object; and it consists of the peculiar construction and arrangement hereinafter more fully set forth or its equivalent.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cigar-box, showing the cover thereof held upright by my device, the arrangement being such that the cover is tilted rearward slightly. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of the device. Fig. 4 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 5 is a lower end view of the device. Fig. 6 is a view of a slightly-modified form, and Fig. 7 is a view of still another modification. p
The device is formed from a metal plate 8, stamped out of a piece of sheet metal. A slot 9 extends upwardly from the lower edge of the device, forming the f urcate parts 10 10. In the forms illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 the furcate part 10 at the edge of the slot is provided with an outwardly-extending shoulder 11, and the furcate part 10 is provided at the edge of the slot with an inwardly-extending shoulder 12. The metal plate is also providedwith an upward extension 13, which is bent inwardly at its edges to form the projecting lips 14 let.
In the application of the support or brace when the cover is open and upright it is applied at the angle of the box, the furcate parts 10 and 10 straddling the back of the box,the shoulder 11 of part 10 bearing against the rear edge of the side piece of the box, and the shoulder 12 of the part 10 bearing against the inner side of the rear of the box while the face of said part 10 is adjacent to the inner side of one end of the box. The edge of the cover is received in the space between the projecting lips 14. 14 of the extension 13, whereby the cover is held firmly at an upright position. The upward extension 13 is preferably disposed at a rear incline, so that the box-cover is held in a slightly-tilted or slanting position.
In Fig. 6, instead of having the shoulder 11 extend in an opposite directionto the shoulder 12, I extend said shoulder in the same direction, as indicated at 11'.
In Fig. 7 I show a form in which the shoulders 11 and 12 are entirely omitted. Such a device of course will successfully hold the box-cover open, but the form shown in the other figures of the drawings, wherein the shoulders are provided, is the preferable form, in view of the fact that such shoulders act as a guard to prevent the device from Working out of the joint between the back piece and side piece of the box at the angle thereof.
It will be seen from the above description that I provide a simple and inexpensive device capable of ready adjustment to the box and when so adjusted acting to securely hold the box-cover in an upright position. In the case of cigar-boxes when the cover is thus held upright in the case it forms a convenient hand-grasp for removing the box in case of a sale.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A box holder orsupport consisting of a plate having a bifurcated lower portion adapted to be adjusted to the back wall of a box, at the angle thereof, the inner furcate part lying against the inner face of the end.
T? w ll an obliquity and lying adjacent to the outer edge of the cover of the box, and provided with inwardly-extending lips between which the edge of the cover is adapted to be received.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARL R. GEORG.
