SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,057, dated November 13, 1 894.
Application filed February 13, 1894. Serial No. 500,006. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that we, HORACE G. ALEX- ANDER and CHARLES E. ALEXANDER, citizens of the United States, residing at South Londonderry, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Corner-Stay for Boxes and Analogous Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in corner stays for boxes and analogous reccp- -tacles.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient corner stay, adapted to be readily applied to a box or analogous receptacle, and capable of securing the sides, ends and the top and bottom of such receptacle together without employing nails, or similar fastening devices.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corner of a box provided with astay constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig.' 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the stay. Fig. 4. is a vertical sectional view.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- 1ngs.
1 and 2 designate one side and an end of a box having their adjacent edges mitered and fitted together, and provided adjacent to the corner thus formed, with exterior vertically disposed inward extending grooves 3, which extend in the direction of the corner at acute angles and receive inward extending flanges 4 of the corner stay 5.
The corner stay is composed of two vertical sides arranged at right angles and covering the corner of the box. It is preferably constructed of sheet metal; and it is provided at its outer vertical edges with the said flanges 4, which are extended inward at an acute angle. By this construction the side and end of the box are securely fastened together without employing nails or similar fastening devices.
The top and bottom of the box 6 and 7, may, if desired, be rabbeted at their edges to fit slightly within the box, and they are securely retained in position by tongues 8 formed in- 5 tegral with the top and bottom of the stay, and consisting of extensions of the sides thereof. These tongues are folded or bent against the top and bottom of the box, and their ends are embedded in the same, thereby 5o securely fastening the top and bottom to the sides and ends. The top may be readily removed by lifting the upper tongue of the stay.
The corner stay is applicableto all characters of boxes, cases, closures, and the like, whether the top and bottom be secured by the tongues or not. In some cases it may be preferable to secure the bottom by the tongues and have a hinged or other form of cover, and it will be apparent that the stay can be employed for connecting the sides and bottom of a wagon box or body. Numerous other applications of the stay will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
It will be seen that the stay is simple and 7 5 inexpensive in construction, that it is strong and durable, and that it securely fastens the parts of a box together without glueing, nailing, or similarly securing the parts.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
WVhat we claim is s 5 The combination with the sides of a box provided adjacent to the corner with vertical grooves, of a corner stay composed of vertical sides arranged at right angles and covering the corner of the box and provided at their vertical outer edges with flanges arranged at an acute angle to the sides and interlocked in said grooves and terminating short of the ends of the stay to permit a cover to be readily detached from or placed on the box, 5 said stay being provided at the top and bottom with securing tongues, substantially a decribed.
