Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. MAGUIRE, OF EAST BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IM PROVEM ENT IN TUYERES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,582, dated July 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs F. MAGUIRE, of East Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tuyere-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, -in which- Figure l is a vertical section of my improved tuyere-iron taken through the line x a, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved tuyere-iron for blacksmiths forges; and it consists of a tuyere-iron formed by combining a water-grate with an air-chamber, the whole being constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
The water-grate A is made in the form of a box having two slot-holes, B andv C, through it, as shown in the drawings. It is also furnished withy two pipes, D and E, by one of which water is introduced into the water-grate A, and by the other it is withdrawn when desired. The blast passes up through the slots B and C into the fire. One of these holes is covered with a slide-damper, F, which is operated by a rod, Gr, passing out through the side of the grate A. By this means the size of the re may be regulated by shutting off the blast from one of the holes. The blast is introduced into the air-chamber H through the pipes I, and from the air-chamber it passes through the slot-holes B and C to the re.
The air-chamber His made in the form shown in Fig. l, and the opening at the bottom is closed by a valve, J, attached to the end of a lever, K. This lever is pivoted to a support, L, descending from the side of the air-chamber H, to which it is secured, as shown in Fig. 1. The valve J is kept in place by the weight IWI attached to the end of the lever. This chamber H acts as an air-chamber for regulating the steadiness of the blast, and it also receives the cinders that fall through the holes B and G, which cinders can be removed by opening the valve J. By using this watergrate the cinders will not adhere to the grate and impede the draft as they otherwise would.
The air-chamber H may be supported in place by means of the flange N, which is formed upon all sides of the said air-chamber, as shown in the drawings, and the air-cham ber H and the water-grate A are connected together by the open upper end of the said air-chamber fitting into a cavity formed on the lower side of the water-grate A, as shown in Fig. 1. The said water-grate can thus be readily removed, when necessary, for making repairs or for any other purpose.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A tuyere constructed substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES F. MAGUIBE. Witnesses:
PATRICK KEENAN, THOMAS RICE.
