Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ORATER, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a knockdown table in which the top is preferably made in one piece and the base is constructed in two pieces, adapted to interlock with each other and with a block on the under side of the top, whereby the base and top are firmly connected and the several parts brace each other so as to make a substantialarticle of furniture.

The invention may be embodied in and is chiefly designed for use as a toy table, but it is adapted for full-sized tables.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations of the base-pieces, and Fig. 4 is an inverted plan View of a broken section of the table-top and the block thereon.

The several parts of the table may be made from solid wood or wood veneer of any desired number of plies, and the top and base may be worked in any desired pattern and conveniently by the use of a scroll or band saw. As shown in the drawings, the top is circular and the base is in two pieces, each having diverging legs and two feet. The top (marked A) has secured to its lower side a block B, the ends of which are curved transversely of the block and the vertical edges beveled, as seen at b. The base-piece C has the seat 0, with inclined side walls 0, and a central opening 0, which may be formed by cutting with a saw passing through the slot -c. The base-piece D is provided with a similar seat and with the opening D, into which leads the slot cl.

The parts may be conveniently united by placing the base-piece O at right angles to and beneath the base-piece D, and then by moving the latter down upon the former the slot d will receive the solid portion 6 below the opening O and the solid portion f will pass into the slot 0. The parts are thus firmly interlocked and may be united to the tabletop by placing them over the block B and then drawing the base laterally until the curved ends of the block firmly engage the beveled ends of the seat.

As shown, the seats are of like formation, but obviously it is not necessary to specially construct both of them, as either will suffice to hold the parts firmly in place. Iconstruct them alike, so that either will fit the block, and therefore no special care is required in assembling the parts.

Obviously the details of construction may be considerably varied, the outlines of the parts may be changed at will, and the manner of securing the top and the base together may be changed. I prefer to construct the several parts so that they may be put together without the employment of glue, nails, or screws.

I claim- 1. A knockdown table, comprising in combination a top having a block on its lower side and a two-part base one of the parts having a seat in its upper end with shoulders to engage said block and a vertical slot leading from the bottom of said seat and the other member having an upwardly-opening vertical slot, substantially as described.

2. A knockdown table, comprising in combination a top having ablock on its lower side with curved ends and its vertical edges inwardly inclined and a base constructed of two parts adapted to interlock with each other and one of said parts havinga dovetail seat adapted to engage with the curved and beveled ends of said block, substantially as described.

3. A knockdown table, comprisingin combination a top having a block on its lower surface and a base composed of two pieces each of which has a seat in its top adapted to receive said block and one of said base-pieces having a vertical slot opening downwardly from the bottom of said seat and the other having an upwardly-opening slot below said seat, substantially as described.
