SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,443, dated December 17, 1895. Application nea september 27,1895. seria No. 563,897. (No man.)
To all whom, imag/concern .for lling the box with oilor lubricant7 and Be it known thatwe, JAMES OsWALD LADDs a door 13 suitably secured by screwawhich and EDWARD SELBY, subjects of Her Majesty gives access to the interior. the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Salt-v In the upper partof the box is held the bear- 55 5 ley, in the county of Varwiek, England, ln ve ing 14C, such bearing being provided with a invented a certain new and useful Iniprovel stud l5, which is let into the lug S for the. purment in AxleBoXes for Railway and Like-Veposejof keeping the bearing in position. The hicles, of which the following is a specitica-4 sides of vthe bearing are providedwth lugs tion. 16 1G having studs 17 thereon, which serve to 6o IO 'Our invention relates to improvements inl retain in place compressedpsprings 1S, the axle-boxes for railway and like vehicles, the tendency of which is to force upward or lift object of our invention being to provide anv the aXle-boX l. This tendency is counteraXle-box in which the wear of the bearings acted by means of a friction-roller 19, (or it will be automatically and effectually taken up may be rollers,) which is kept pressed against 6 5 15 and in which the axle-box will be kept conthe end of the axle, s'o that the box is alcentric or approximately so) with the axle ways concentric therewith, said box being under all conditions of wear. y gradually raised by the springs lS as the bear- In the accompanying drawings, which illus-l ing wears and the bogie-fraine, saddle, and trate one mannerof carryingour invention' bearing fall, the amount of space through 7c 2o into effect, Figure l. is a sectional elevation which the two forlnermayfall being indicated of an axle-box adapted to suit bogie-stockj in Figs. l and 3 by the space around the lug Fig. 2 is a half plan of saine. The lug Q2 tion across an axle-bonte show a modification' is formed in a partition or wall 25, which is 8o 3o ofour invention. cast with the axlebox, such partition sepa- In the drawings the axle-box l is shown asj rating the oil-chamber 2G from a Waste-oil formed in one piece supported in asaddle 2, chamber 27, which is provided with a screwwhich is in turn held between the bogiefbars plug 2S for withdrawing the contents of saine. 3 3 The partition 25 at one end is formed with a 85 3 5 The saddle 2 consists of a casting having flange 29, forining'pait of a stutling-box for ear-pieces l 4, which embrace one ofthe up-j preventing the escape ot oil out of the chain- ;er bogie-bars 3,V and hollow distance-pieces ber 26. v 5 having webs 1l, the latter carrying at Inside the ila-nge is a packing 30 kept in their lower ends lugs or ears G G, which em- ,place by the cap or follower 3l. This cap is 9o 4o brace the lower bogie-bar 3. Through the provided with lugs 32, Figs. 2 and l, carrying distance-pieces 5 5 pass bolts 7 provided with pins or studs7 on which are springs which the necessary nuts, which secure the upper keep the cap or follower in place, such springs and lower bogie-bar` and the saddle together. pressing in turn against a closingplate Si, The saddle has a lug 8, which passes into the which is secured by screws 35. Anyoil which 9 5 45 axlebox l and talles the longitudinal thrust may pass the gland will nd its way into the of the axle 9 on the bearing. The axlebox waste-oil chamber 27. is provided with ear-pieces l0 '10, which ein- In' place of or in addition to the screw 2S brace the edges of the webs ll, so that the the box may be provided with a small cenbox may be guided thereby in its vertical trifugal pump for removing the waste oil roo 5o movement. The box is providedwith a screwfrom the chamber 27 and passing it back to plug l2, which closes an opening employed the chamber 26. A construction of pump suited for this purpose is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, in which it will be seen that the pin or axle 2O of the roller 19 is extended into the body of a pump 36 and carries the arms 37 of same, the inlet-pipe 3S of the pump passing into the waste-oil chamber Q7, while the outlet-pipe 39 delivers into the chamber 2G, the pump being operated by the movement of the roller caused by the friction of the axle 9 thereon.
In Fig. 7 is shown the arrangement employed when the axle-box is formed in top and bottom parts 1 2 instead of in one piece. Inthis case the top part 2" is provided with a recess 40 for the vehicle-spring and springbuckle and a recess 41, in which is fitted the bearing 14. It is also provided with a projection 42, which iits into a recess in the bearing 14 in order to take the longitudinal thrust. On the side of the partQ are projections 43 corresponding toprojections 44 or the bottom part 1, and through these projections pass bolts 45, said bolts being provided with the necessary nuts and with springs 13, which act to raise the bottom portion l as the bearing wears, or, in other words, keeps it concentric with the axle as the upperpart 2 falls with the wear of the bearing.
That we claim is* 1. In combination, the axle, a bearing above same, a box inelosing said bearing, means for supporting the bearing, springs exercising a pressure between a fixed part and the box, so that the box is lifted and kept concentric with the axle as the bearing wears, means forearrying the springs and means for counteract ing the upward tendency of the springs, substantially as described.

3. In combination, the axle, a bearing above same, a box adapted to hold oil, inelosing said bearing, means for carrying said box, springs adapted to raise said box and keep it concentric with the axle as the bearing wears, a friction roller carried by the box on which the axle bears, for counteracting the upward tendency of the springs, means for carrying and guiding the springs, and means for guiding the box and supporting the bearing, substantially as described.
4. In combination, the axle, abearing above same, a box adapted to hold oil inelosing said bearing, springs between the bearing and the box so that the box is lifted and kept concentric with the axle, a saddle in which the box is guided, means for supporting the saddle, a lug carried by the saddle and passing into the box for supporting the bearing a friction roller carried by the box on which the axle bears, and adapted to counteract the upward tendency of the springs, a partition in the box for forming a waste oil chamber beneath same, and a stuffing box for preventing the escape of oil from the axle box, substantially as described.
5. In combination, the axle, a bearing above same, a box adapted to hold oil, inelosing said bearing, springs between the bearing and the box so that the box is lifted and kept concentric with the axle, a saddle in which the box is guided, means for supporting the saddle, a lug carried by the saddle and passing into the box for supporting the bearing and takin g the longitudinal thrust, means carried by the bearing and engaging with said lug for keeping the bearing in position, a friction roller Carried by the box on which the axle bears and adapted to counteract the upward tendency of the springs, lugs for supporting the friction roller, a spring Vfor keeping saine in contact with the end of the axle, a partition in the box for forming a waste oil chamber beneath same, a stuffing box for preventing the escape of oil from the axle box, and a plate for covering the stuffing box substantially as described.
6. In combination, the axle, a bearing above same, a box adapted to hold oil inelosing said bearing, springs exercising a pressure between a fixed part and the box so that the box is lifted and -kept concentric with the axle as 'the bearing wears, a friction roller carried by the box on which theaxle bears for countei acting the upward tendency of the springs, -a partition in the box for forming a waste oil chamber beneath same, a stuffing box for preventing the esc-ape of oil from the axle box, land a centrifugal pump operated by the revolving axle for lifting the waste oil from its chamber back to the axle box, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribin witnesses. X
