. NITED STATES ATENT OFFICE,
JONATIIANPETERSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN TOBACCO COMPANY, OF NEW JERSEY.
PACKING AN osHow CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,100, dated April 14, 1896.
Application filed Nflvember 14, 1894. Serial No. 528,724. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN PETERSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New 5 York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing and Show Cases, fully described and represented in the following specificationand the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
to The object of the present invention is to provide an improved receptacle forming at the same time a convenient packing-case in which small articles may be packed by the wholesaler for shipment and a show-case in which :5 they may be exposed in a convenient and attractive manner for sale by the retailer.
As a full understanding of the invention can best be given by a detailed description of a construction embodying the same in the pre ferred form, all further preliminary description will be omitted and such a description given in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-- 2 Figure 1 shows the improved packing and show case used as a sealed packing-case. Fig. 2 shows the same opened and in use as a showcase. Figs. 3 and 4. are respectively crosssections of the case closed and open.
go Referring to said drawings, the case consists of a box A of suitable material, preferably pasteboard, containing the small boxes or,
other articles B and having a cover C, formed by hinging one-half of the top and the whole 5 or part of the front of the box, the ends being cut on the desired angle. This cover is shown as hinged to the top of the box by a strip d, of cloth or other suitable material. The front of the box is preferably not entirely cut away,
;.0 but a portion a is left, which forms a ledge holding the boxes B in place and forming an advertising-surface. The front of cover C, however, preferably extends substantially to the bottom of the box, being provided with an 5 extension I), which-overlaps the ledge a when the box is closed, so that the ledge a and extension 6 lie with their adjoining faces in immediate contact throughout the superficial extent of the ledge, this portion 19 forming an ;0 extended advertising-card extending above the tops of the boxes B when the case is opened and upon which any suitable matter may be printed. The ledge a an d extension I) not only provide extended and permanent advertising surfaces, but are importantfeatures inthe me- 5 5 chanical construction of the case and increase largely its strength when closed, so that a case of suflicient strength for shipment may be made of cheap and light material, such as cardboard. The ledge a gives the box the strength incident to the connection of the ends of the box at all four edges, and the extension I) on the cover gives an extended surface to be pressed against the ledge, thus holding the parts of the packing-case in proper position and producing a very strong construction. A further advantage is thus secured in that, if desired, there may be no joint onZthe top of the box, so that the entire top may be used for a label or advertisement and the box opened without severing except at the ends of the box.
The top series of boxes B rests upon the bottom of the cover C when the case is opened and upon the tops of the front series of boxes when the case is closed and are held in po- 7 5 sition in the cover, so that the case may be closed and opened without displacement of' this row, by a band c on the cover extending. in front of this row of boxes, and this band preferably consists of a simple endless rubber 8o band extending about the cover, as shown, and
l secured in place by a strip of paper or similar mmaterial d, which is pasted over the top and ends of the case A, this strip serving as a sealing-strip to hold the case closed when used 8 for packing and shipping.
lVhen the case A isto be opened, it is necessary only to slit the sealing-strip (1 upon the dotted lines 2 at the end of the casethat is, upon the end lines of division between 0 the cover and body-and the case may be opened into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4 for use as a show-case.
What is claimed isr 1. A packing and show case having the front 5 ledge a, and the hinged cover C closing a part of the top and the front ofthe case above the ledge, and having the extended portion 1), said ledge a and extended portion 19 overlapping and lying with their adjoining faces in imme- 10o diate contact throughout substantially the superficial extent of the ledge when the case is closed, substantially as described.
2. A packing and show case having the front v ledge a and the hinged cover O closing a part of the top and front of the case above the ledge and having the extended portion 1), said ledge a and extended portion 1) overlapping and lying with their adjoining faces in immediate contact throughout substantially the cover for holding articles therein, and sealing-strip 01 over the band, substantially as described.
4. A packing and show case having the fron ledge a, and the hinged cover 0 closing a part of the top and the front of the case above the ledge, and having the extended portion b, said ledge a and extended portion b overlapping and lying with their faces in immediate contact throughout substantially the superficial extent of the ledge when the case is closed, and sealing strip d, substantially as described.
5. Packing and show case A having the front ledge a, and the hinged cover 0 closing a part of the top and the front of the case above the ledge, and having the extended portion b, said ledge a and extended portion 1) overlapping and lying with their faces in immediate c011- tact throughout substantially the superficial extent of the ledge when the case is closed, band 0 extending about the cover for holding articles therein, and sealing-strip (Z over the band, substantially as described.
6. The combination with boxes or similar articles B, of case A within which the boxes are arranged in superposed layers, said case having the front ledge a of less height than the lowest layer of boxes or similar articles, and the hinged cover 0 closing a part of the top and the front of the case above the ledge and having the extended portion 19, said ledge a and extended portion 1) overlapping and lying with their faces in immediate contact throughout substantially the superficial extent of the ledge when the case is closed and said extended portion 19 forming an advertising-card above a row of articles supported upon the open cover, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JONATHAN PETERSON.
