MACHINE FOR DYBING SKINS. No. 542,188. Patented July 2, 1895.
fit-MW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.RICHARD ERGANG, OF MAGDEBURG, GERMANY.
MACHINE FOR DYEING SKINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,188, dated July 2, 1895.
Application filed December 18,1894. Serial No. 77- N m l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD ERGANG, a sub ject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Magdeburg, Germany, haveinvented Improvements in Machinery and Apparatus for Dyeing Skins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of machines or apparatus used for dyeing skins in which the skin to be dyed is placed upon a rotating table, to the center of which the dyeing-liquid is supplied, and is thence caused by centrifugal force to spread over the whole skin.
Hitherto the dyeing-liquid thrown off has been raised by a pump and poured upon the central portion of the rotating table; but this arrangement entails the great disadvantage that various parts of the pump are liable to become quickly rusted by the action of the very considerable moisture which is always present in dye-works, so that such parts are constantly needing repair. Now this disadvantage is obviated, according to the present invention, by employing the rotation produced in the dyeing-liquid by the rotating table to automatically return the dyeing-liquid from the edge to the center of the table.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a plan, and Fig. 3 a vertical section at right angles to Fig. 1, of a skin-dyeing machine according to this invention.
The rotating table A, upon which the skin to be dyedis placed, is made slightly convex and is provided with an upwardly and inwardly bent flange B, adapted to collect the dyeing-liquid. The vertical shaft (1, on which the table A is secured, is adapted to be raised and lowered by means of a lever F, and is provided with a friction-cone D, which, when the table is in its lowered position, rests in a correspondingly-formed recess in a pulley E, which is rotated by means of a rope H.
To the framing of the machine, there is fixed a bent bar or support J, Fig. 1, on which an arm K is mounted so as to be capable of being turned aside in order to allow askin to be readily placed on and removed from the table. The arm K is provided with guidesleeves L for the reception of a pipe M N, which is made of rubber or other suitable flexible material. This pipe is normally situate at a small distance above the table, and is arranged with its end M terminating over the middleof the tableA and with its other end N terminating in the channel formed by the flange B and pointing in the direction opposite to that indicated .by the arrow in Fig. 2. This arrow indicates the direction in which the table A rotates. By this arrangement, when the table is caused, by means of the rope H, to rotate in the direction indicated by the arrow, the dyeing-liquid that is in the channel formed by the flange B, participating as it will in the rotation of the table A, will be caused to pass through the flexible pipe M N and be discharged through the other end M of the said pipe onto the central portion ofthe table A. In this way the dyeing-liquid will be caused to travel continuously in a circuit.
the arm K, that carries the flexible pipe M N, is turned to one side,.as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
When the machine is to be put out of op-' eration, the outer arm of the lever F is depressed until a pawl G, pivoted to the frame of the machine, catches in a suitable notch in the lever F. By pulling a chain 0 the pawl G can be again disengaged, so as to allow the shaft 0 to descend and bring the friction-cone D into gear with the rope-pulley E.
I claim as my invention 1. An apparatus for dyeing skins, comprising a rotary table provided with a channel around the edge thereof and a pipe opening at one end into the said channel in a direction opposite to that of the rotation of the table, and the other end opening near the center of the table, whereby, when the table is rotated the liquid collecting in the channel, participating in the rotation of the table, is caused to pass through the pipe and be discharged over the center of the table.
2. An apparatus for dyeing skins, comprising a rotary table provided at its edge with an upwardly and inwardly bent flange to form a channel and a flexible pipe having one end opening into the channel in a direction oppo- When a skin is to be laid upon the table A,
site to that of the rotation of the table, and
the other end opening near the center of the table, all substantially as set forth.
3. An apparatus for dyeing skins, comprising a rotary table provided at its outer edge with a channel, a flexible pipe having one end opening into the channel in a direction opposite to that of the rotation of the table and the other end opening near the center of the table, and an arm pivoted to a stationary part of the table frame the said arm being provided with sleeves for the reception of the flexible tube, substantially as and for the pur- 1o pose set forth.
In testimony whereof I- have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
