THREAD AND NEEDLE SAFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,736, dated October 8, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIUS NOTKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Thread and Needle Safes, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a thread and needle case which is simple, cheap, and provided with a door containing a hinged magnet for holding a needle while the needle is temporarily out of use, and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the an nexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the safe opened and parts sectioned. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the safe, and Fig. 3 a side elevation thereof.

The safe 1 is shown with a door 2, and the safe, with the door, can be given any suitable or ornamental shape. The door 2 when opened gives access to the interior of the case or safe, so that a spool can be inserted into a spool-holder 3. In the drawings are shown six spool-holders, but of course this number can be varied. Each spool-holder is readily formed by bending a piece of sheet metal into cylindrical form, the edges not quite meeting, so as to leave a slot 4, and securing the holder so formed to the back or other suitable wall of the safe. When a spool 5 has been inserted into a holder, said spool is readily retained therein by a cap or cover 6, the thread 7 from the spool running off through the slot 4. and the exit-opening 8 in the safe 1, so that said thread can be drawn off, as required, from the outside of the safe.

The safe 1 is shown with a partition 9 placed between the spool-holders, a drawer 1O sliding between the partition and the supports 9, said drawer serving for the retention of needles and the like. The partition 9 sup ports a clamp or thimble-holder 11 readily formed by spring-prongs adapted to releasably grasp the thimble.

In sewing it is frequently desired to temporarily put aside a needle, but to keep said needle ready to hand. A magnet 12 serves to hold a needle while temporarily out of use. The magnet 12 is shown jointed or hinged at 13 to door 2. When the magnet is swung or raised to exposed position and the door 2 closed the magnet isheld in position for service; but when the safe is to be put aside the door 2, being opened, will allow the magnet to be folded or swung down or inward, so that when the door is now closed the magnet is contained within the safe or concealed. When a holder 3 has been freshly supplied with a spool, the thread end from such freshly-inserted spool when looped or engaged to the hook or threader 14., previously passed from the outside part way through the proper exit-opening 8, can be drawn or started out through said exit-openin g by the drawing out of the threader. The threader is readily formed from a small or thin piece of metal adapted topass or partly pass through each of the openings 8, sufiiciently for its hook or catching part 15 to enter the safe and receive a thread end. The door 2 when mounted on a spring-hinge and held closed by a catch will fly open automatically on the releasing of the catch. The magnet 12 is shown in Fig. 2 as holding or attracting needles 16.

WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A thread and needle safe provided with a door, and a magnet hinged or jointed to said door so as to be capable of being moved into and out of the safe substantially as described.
