W. E. KARNS. PENCIL HOLDER.
No.- 544,671. Patented Aug. 20, 1895.
by ifgzsses UNTTED STATES PATENT QEETEE.
WILLIAM EJKARNKS, or PARKERS LANDING, PENNSYLVANIA.
PENCIL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,671, datedAugust 20, 1895.
Application filed Ianuary 19, 1895. Serial No. 535,539- (No modeLl To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. KARNs,-a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkers Landing, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Pencil-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in safety devices especially applicable to the pockets of garments and adapted to prevent the escape of the contents thereof.
The object of my invention is to produce a cheap, simple, and durable device or attachment which is applicable to a pocket of any size, and which is thoroughly effective for the purpose to which it is adapted.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a front view of a portion of a garment, showing the application of my improved safety attachment in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device detached, showing the manner in which it engages a pencil, pen, or other article. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the case or mouthpiece of the device. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same, showing the .manner of applying thespringwire frame or loop to the case or mouthpiece.
' Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
' A represents a garment to which my device (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1) is applicable.
B indicates an elongated mouthpiece or casing of hard or vulcanized rubber, open at top and bottom, and having an aperture of sufficient size to readily admit of the passage through the same of pencils, pens, and other similar articles in every-day use.
0 C representvthe downwardly-projecting lips of soft rubber. These lips are preferably vulcanized to the hard-rubber case or mouthpiece, and are made to converge downwardly,
and at their lower extremities to approach sufficiently near to eachother to grasp and hold suspended a pen or pencil when the same is inserted through-the case or mouthpiece.
D represents a piece of spring-wire in the form of a loop extending downwardly from the case B and made to bulge or flare so as to engage and spread the pocket to which it is applied. The upper ends of this wire loop are bent outwardly and pass through perforations in the opposite ends of the hard-rubber case or mouthpiece.- After having passed through such perforations these ends are upturned to an angle of about forty-five degrees and sharpened or pointed.
To apply my improved device to a pocket it is inserted therein, Wire loop foremost, and pressed downwardly until the said loop expands, when upon relieving the pressure upon the case B the same is forced upward by the spring-loop D until the points at d engage the inside of the pocket, thus preventing accidental displacement of the device from the pocket.
By the construction just described Iobtain a mouthpiece having an opening of fixed and unchangeable size and configuration, always ready to receive a pen or pencil without having first to be pried or forced open by the end of the pen or pencil. At the same time the soft-rubber lips may, in such construction of mouthpiece, be made of any desired thickness or density and a greater or less grasp and holding-power given to the same at the desire of the manufacturer.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pencil holder, a hard rubber case or mouthpiece provided with downwardly projecting soft rubber lips, and the spring-wire frame or loop extending downwardly from said case or mouth piece, for the purpose described.
2. In a safety device for pockets, a hard rubber case or mouth piece provided with the downwardly projecting soft rubber lips vulcanized thereto, the spring-wire frame or loop for holding the device in proper position, and
the flaring points for engaging the pocket and 5 preventing the escape of the holder, substantially as described. 1
3. In a safety attachment for use in connection with the pocket of a garment, a hard rubber case or mouth piece provided with downwardly converging, soft rubber lips, the In testimony that I claim the foregoing as wire loop or frame for holding the device in my own I have hereto affixed my signature in proper position, and the pointed ends of the the presence of two witnesses.
wire loop or frame projecting through the WVILLIAM E. KARNS. 5 hard rubber case or mouth piece for engaging VVi-tnesses:
the pocket and preventing the escape of the JOHN H. SIGGERS,
holder, substantially as specified. E. G. SIGGERS.
