METHOD OF PRODUUING GRILLE OR SCROLL WORK. No. 544,109. Patented Aug. 6', 1895.

U ITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH P. MoHUGH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
METHOD OF PRODUCING GRILLE OR SCROLL WORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,109, dated August 6, 1895.
Application filed March 20, 1895- Serial No. 542,455. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. MOHUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 3 West Forty-second street, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Methods of Producing Grille or Scroll Work, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the production of ornamental grille or scroll work, such as may be used in house decoration or employed for panels, screens, and similar articles.
My invention, broadly stated, consists in combining with a base so constructed that it will not warp under variations of temperature and through which a specified openwork pattern has been formed, a plastic ornamentation applied to one or both surfaces of the base and correspondingin general design to the pattern formed in the base and having a surface ornamentation in appearance simulating carving.
To carry my invention into effect, I proceed as follows: I first prepare a base made of three layers of wood glued together with their grains crossed, and upon this base a design is traced and cut out with a jig-saw, or by any other suitable means such as is commonly employed in making ordinary surface scrollwork. Subsequently I apply to one or" both surfaces of the base a plastic ornament which corresponds in general outline with that of the design formed by the remaining portion of the base, and having its exterior surface so molded to give it the appearance of 'a' carved surface in relief.
The composition which may be employed for the plastic ornamentation may be that commonly used for making ornaments by manufacturers of picture or mirror frames, and may be attached to the backing by means of glue orcement, or it may be mechanically secured thereto. The general effect of the grille'or scroll work when completed and colored is that of an extremely well-executed piece of wood-carving. I am thus enabled to obtain a decorative efiect corresponding to that of fine wood-carving at an extremely small cost for production.
The accompanying drawings will serve to further illustrate my invention as carried into effect.
Figure 1 is a front view of a grille or scroll work made according to myinvention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the base or body portion. Fig. 3 is a front view illustrating the manner of making up the base and also showing a design traced upon the base and formed through the base, that at the right of the figure being cut out and ready for the application of the plastic ornament. Fig; 4 is a front view of a plastic ornament corresponding to the design upon the base and ready to be applied. Figs. 5 and 6 are vertical sections showing, respectively, the base with one or two decorative surfaces.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the base, which is composed of thin layers of wood a b c, which are glued together so that their grains cross, as shown in Fig. 3.
3 represents the plastic ornament, which may be given any general and surface design and applied to either one or both surfaces of the base.
The perforations or openings through the base are indicated by 0.
Instead of cutting out the design upon the base prior to the application of the plastic ornament, I may first apply the ornament and then cut out all of that portion of the base not covered by the ornament.
I wish it understood that I do not claim as my invention the method of forming the base of three layers of wood herein described. Neither do I claim to be the first to apply a plastic ornament to a base which will not warp.
Whatl do claim as my invention is- 1. The improvement in the method of producing grille or scroll work described, which consists in producing upon a suitable base, any requiredopen work design, and subsequently applying to one or both surfaces of said base, a plastic open work ornament corresponding in general outline to said design.
2. In a grille or scroll work, the combination of a base with an open work design formed therein, and a plastic open work ornamentation corresponding in general outline to the design of the base and applied to one or both surfaces of said base.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a screen,
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
J ()SEPII P. DIICIIIIGII.
