AWNING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,098, dated December 4, 1894.

Application filed March 31, 1894. Serial No. 505 ,966. (No model.) Patented in Ganada February 24, 1894, No. 45 ,416.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, EDQUARD FAUTEUX, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing V in the city and district of Montreal and Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awnings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

A patent for this invention has been obtained in Canada, No. 45,416, dated February 24, 1894.

My invention has reference to the frame work of awnings for stores and consists in replacing the spring roller at the top, or the geared one, by a roller propelled by a weight suspended on to a brass band and also in the arrangement of the several parts as explained hereinafter and having for object to provide a better awning frame than those now existing.

Referring to the drawings similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

My invention consists in the two strong upright guides A, securely fastened on either side of the window B, and on to which slide the weights 0 and D, which are provided with the lugs 0' and d. To the latter are joined the brass bands 01 and c which are wound around the pulleys d and c mounted on to the extremities of the roller E, whose shaft is supported by means of the brackets F and G which are fastened to the building in any suitable manner. As the brass bands (1 and c are secured to the pulleys d and 0 when the weights 0 and D fall downward they make the roller E turn to the right and thus wind the canvas H around it, but in order to permit of the weights 0 and D to fall downward, I make use of the pieces I, joined at one end to the guides J and at the other to the pieces K, they having'a joint 11 in their center, which permits their folding, by the joints 2' rising,

this having for eifect to force the joint M of the piece K inward toward the building as shown by the arrow in Fig. 3, and as the canvas H would then be slack the weights fall and wind it up, the piece K folding on itself as shown in Fig. 4.

The end m of the pieces K are joined to the pieces N whose other extremities slide on the guides J and have for object to keep the whole more rigid.

On to the upper extremities of the guides A I place the springs O which have for objectto cushion the shock which would be caused by the weights 0 and D striking the upper end of the guides A when the awning would be lowered.

The ordinary bar P is secured at m to the pieces K and N. The upper extremities of the pieces K are joined to the building at K.

As the top canvas H is not joined to the sides P, I put scallops at 10, so that the wind cannot pass under the one H, on account of themclosing the openings left between the top and sides.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with the stationary bearing brackets F, the roller journaled therein, the canvas wound on the said roller, and the pulleys secured on the ends of the roller; of the flexible bands wound on the said pulleys and provided with weights operating to wind the canvas on the roller; vertical guides for the said weights; and the two folding frames for holding the canvas extended, each frame consisting of the jointed bar K under the canvas, the bar N pivoted to the lower end of the bar K and serving to hold it extended, and the jointed diagonally-arranged bar I pivoted to the upper part of the bar K, substantially as described and shown.
