E. J. MILLER.
-GOMB.
No.535,954; I Patented Mar.19,-189 5.
, LSV U l WITNESSES: I, ,2? @Z /N%) ATE FFKQE EMIL J. MILLER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO IGNATIUS RICE AND WILLIAM R. HOCHSTEB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,954, dated March 19, 1895.
Application filed December 29,1894= Serial No. 533,315. (No model.)
To 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL J. MILLER, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in combs, such as bang-combs, sidecombs, backcombs, dressingcombs, &c., whereby the appearance of the same is considerably improved and the comb retained firmly in position in the hair; and the invention consists of a comb, having a four-sided frame, and teeth, the base-ends of which are attached to one of the four sides of the frame, While the teeth are surrounded by the frame and project at a suitable angle of inclination to the plane thereof, so that when the teeth are inserted into the hair the exterior frame imparts abuckleor slide-like appearance to the comb.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents aperspective view of my improved side-comb made for use in the hair. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line 2, 2, Fig.
1. Fig. 3 isa perspective view of a back-comb made according to my construction, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on line 4, 4, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a comb, the teeth a of which extend downward from the upper part or top A of the comb. Integral with the top A of the comb is arranged a frame B which surrounds the teeth and the teeth a of which are located at a suitable angle of inclination to the same so asto impart a buckleor slide-like appearance to the comb when the teeth are inserted into the hair. The frame B may be made plain or carved and ornamented in any suitable man ner.
The teeth of the comb are bent so as to be inward from the frame, so that when the teeth are inserted into the hair, the frame B retains the hair and imparts thereby a very orna mental appearance to the comb.
My improved comb can be made of any suitable material and is adapted for all. kinds of hair-combs, the principle in all cases being to formin addition to the comb abuckle-shaped frame which presses on the hair and tends to retain the same in position and which adds also to the beauty and strength of the comb.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A comb, provided with a four-sided frame and with teeth, the base-endsof which are attached to one of the four sides of the frame, while the teeth are surrounded by the frame and project therefrom at a suitable angle of inclination to its plane, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the forcgoin g as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMIL J. MlLLER.
