BURGLAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patentwo. 521,024, dated June 5, 1894.
Application filed December 27,1893. Serial No. 494,839. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: Beit known that I, NOAH HAMLET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, 1n the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarm-Bells; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an automatic window alarm bell in connection with suitable mechanism for operating the same, and is particularly adapted to co-operate with my sash balance mechanism, patented August 22, 1893, and numbered 503,596; but it will operate in connection with any sash balance mechanism constructed substantially as mine just above referred to.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same, the view showing two strikers one attached to each sash. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the frame. Fig. dis a plan view of the striker and pinion. Fig. 5 shows both sides of the cut-out device. Fig. 6 is a plan sectional view of the staple for hanging the arm which supports the bell hanging pendant. Fig. 7 is a view of the bell hanging pendant. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the bearing which supports thependulum. Fig. 9 is a view showing the bell in section and the bell hanging pendant, (Fig. 7) bearing, (Fig. 8) and pendulumsbearing the strikers, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 10 represents part of a window, showing the bearing in which key E, works.
My invention is described as follows:
A, represents the frame having an oblong rectangular opening for the edge of the wheel or drum B, to work through. One of the arms a is provided with a square opening of, (Fig. 1) While the opposite arm a is provided with a circular opening concentric with the square opening a in order that the axle may lie parallel to the face of the face-plate a, and perpendicular to the face of the long arm a.
The wheel or drum B, is cast in two parts and go together with a tight fit. Each part of the wheel or drum is provided with a central axle openin These openings are accurately centered and lined, so that when the two parts are put together and hung on the axle the wheel or drum will run perfectlytrue. Secured in said wheel or drum 'is a spiral spring to rotate the same indicated by the dotted lines, shown in Fig. l.
- The arm a, is provided with an extension a having a hole through itsouter end straight and perpendicular to its face for the stud e, of the hub of the strikers e, to run in. 'The said wheel or drum B, is provided on one of its sides with cogs b, which mesh with the pinion wheel 12 of the striker. The said pinion wheel b is secured to the rear or inner end of the stud e, both the pinion and stud being so designed that when they are in position they will run freely and evenly. Said stud e, forms a running fit in the extended arm 01. of the frame A.
The striker 0, consists of hub 0, arms 6', stud e, and pinion wheel b (Fig. 4.) The bell D, has its edge well turned out and is hung loosely on the pendant d. Said pendant d, has its upper end turned in the form of a hook and is hooked in the perforated end of the elbow arm 61'; said elbow arm has extending from its lower face a rod (1 said elbow arm (1', is secured to the wall by means of the staple (1 (Fig. 6.) Said staple 01 is provided with points 0?, which are driven in the wood of the frame.
E, is the bell cut out, and consists of a key having its inner end flat, and having its outer end a flattened head. This key fits in a suitable bearing, in or attached to the windowframe. When the bell is to be let down, the
flat side of the key is turned to the elbow arm d. When the bell is to be thrown out of contact with the strikers c, said key is turned edgewise against said elbow arm pushing it up a little and consequently the pendulum f, outof contact with the strikers.
On the lower end of the pendant d, is secured a bearing g, on each end of which are pivoted the pendulums f. To each side of said pendulums is secured a spring f, having on its end a ball so constructed as to come in contact with the bell when the striker C, is rotated and the arms 6, come in contact with said pendulums.
Each sash (the upper and lower) is pro vided with the striking device, and the bell is so situated in the window frame, that when.
onesash, (for instance the front one) is moved up or down, its striker will come in contact with the front pendulum and ring the bell, and when the upper or rear sash is moved up or down its striker will come in contact with the rear pendulum and ring the bell.
The periphery of the wheel or drum proects through the edge of the frame A, and against the edge of the sash, and when the sash is moved up or down said wheel or drum is rotated and its cogs 12, mesh with the cogs of the pinion wheel b and rotates said pinion and consequently the striker G, and the striker arms e, are brought in contact with the pendulum f, and give notice to the inmates of the house.
Just above the hell is a flaring tube F, which runs up into the room immediately above the bell, which may be provided with branches to conduct the sound to all parts of the house.
I-laving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The alarm bell mechanism, consisting of the frame A, rotating wheel or drum B, journaled in said frame and provided with cogs b; striker C, secured to the stud e, jonrnaled in the extension a of the arm a pinion Z2 secured on the inner end of said stud e, and meshing with cogs 1); bell D, hung in the window frame; and pendnlums f, hung in said bell in position to come in contact with the arms of the said striker, and bearing oneach side strikers f, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. In an alarm bell mechanism, the bell hanging device, consisting of the staple (1 adapted to be driven into the wall of the window frame; elbow arm at, having the lower rod (1 said elbow arm suspended in said staple; pendant d, hung in the outer end of arm cl, and adapted to bearabell; cut out E, working under the arm (1, and adapted to throw the bell in and out of contact with the striker, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
3. In an alarm bell and hell hanging mechanism, consisting of the staple cl"; perforated elbow arm (1, having the lower rod (Z pendant cl, hung in the outer end of arm d; hearing g, secured on the lower end of said pendant; pend uln ms f, pivoted on the ends of said bearing; strikers f, secured on each side of said pendulums; and bell D, hung on said pendant cl, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
