'SUSPENDER CAST-OFF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,723, dated May 29, 1894. Application filed February 17,1894. Serial No. 500,555- (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CASPER BLOOMBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender Cast-Offs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to cast off buckles for suspenders, and it consists in certain novel constructions and arrangements of the parts as will be hereinafter described; whereby, first, the cast off is more securely retained upon the Suspender gripping or clamping member of the buckle and yet may be very readily released when necessity requires for the casting 01f to be effected; also whereby, second, the retaining spring is iuclosed in a protecting crowning and finishing cap of the cast off and thus guarded against casual displacement and the buckle at the same time given a finished appearance, and likewise whereby, third, the cast off, spring" retaining tongue and the crowning cap maybe constructed in one piece out of sheet metal.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view illustrating my invention applied to a suspender. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my improved buckle and an edge view of a portion of the suspender. Fig. 3. is a detached front view of the gripping or clamping member of the buckle. Fig. 4. is a vertical section of the said gripping or clamping member. Fig. 5. is a front view of the cast oif member of the buckle. Fig. 6. is a vertical section of the said cast off member. Fig. 7. isa front view of the cast off member as constructed with a crowning protecting cap inclosing the retaining spring. Fig. 8 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 9. is a front view of the cast ofi member made of a single piece and comprising a tab loop, retaining tongue and a crowning protecting cap and Fig. 10 is a vertical section of the device as constructed in Fig. 9.

In the accompanying drawings, A, Figs. 9 and 10 indicates one way of constructing the cast ofi member of the buckle. 13, Figs.

2 and 8, indicates one way of constructing the. gripping member of the buckle. The portion Ais formed with a tab loop a, key hole shaped slot 1) and a retaining spring tongue 0, having a teat shaped projection c,.and a crowning protection cap d which incloses the tongue and guards it against being struck and broken off or injured. The cast off member A, shown in Figs. 9 and 10, is made by the operation of single piece of metal in the manner shown in said figures.

The gripping portion B is formed with a projection f made to'form a hollow stud as indicated in Figs. 2, 3 and 8 or in the form of a solid concaved stud as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. In either of the constructions shown in Figs. 2 and 8 or Figs. 3 and 4, there must be an opening of cylindrical form or a concavity for the teat shaped retaining projection 0 to drop into and form a positive connection between the gripping member and the cast off member.

In Figs. 7 and 8 the crowning capd is shown constructed separately from the plate on which the retaining spring is formed and then fastened to the said plate by either milling, stamping or soldering. In Figs. 1, 2, 5, and 6 the crowning cap is left off-but in all these constructions the retaining projection f of the gripping memberB is made hollow or with a depression to receive the teat like projection 0 of the spring tongue 0. By constructing the stud f in the form of a hollow eyelet it can be much more conveniently riveted to the gripping member and at the same time a recess is secured in the stud below its top surface by reason of the eyelet formation, without the necessity of pressing or stamping the stud to form such recess as would be necessary in a solid stud.

The operation of the cast off is as follows: When the members are united and, it is desired to separate the same, it is simply necessary to press downwardly in a vertical plane on the gripping member, by which action the raised, headed stud will be forced into the enlarged part of the key hole slot when the two members will readily separate. When it is desired to reunite the members the stud is pressed far enough into the key hole slot to 60 cutting, stamping, swaging and bending a bring the shank of the stud above the plane of the upper surface of the cast 01f member when it is drawn upward into the narrowed portion of the key hole shaped slot the spring tongue yielding to allow the stud to pass under it and holding it in said narrowed portion against accidental displacement but at the same time permitting of an articulating movement of the cast off member thereby accommodating it to the movements of the body of the wearer.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. A suspender cast off buckle comprising a gripping member provided with a raised, headed eyelet hollow stud, whereby a recess is secured in the said stud below its top surface and aready means of securing the stud to the said gripping member afforded, and a cast 01f member provided with a tab holding loop, akey hole slot and a spring tongue, said tongue being attached by one of its ends to the said cast off member and having its other end free, and provided on the under side of its free end with a downwardlyextendin g projection, substantially as described.

2. A suspender cast off buckle comprising a gripping member provided with a raised headed stud having a recess in it extending below its top, and a cast off member provided with a protection cap, a tab holding loop, a key hole slot and a spring tongue, said tongue attached by one of its ends to said cast oil"; member and having its other end free, and provided with a downwardly extending projection, said protection cap covering the tongue and guarding it against injury, substantially as described.

3. A suspender cast off buckle comprising a gripping member provided with a raised headed stud having a recess in it extending below its top, and a cast off member made of a single piece of metal and formed with a protection cap, a tab holding loop, a key hole slot and a spring tongue, said tongue being connected by one of its ends to said cast oil member and having its other end free, and formed with a downwardly extending projection, said protection cap covering the tongue and guarding it against injury and giving a finished appearance to the cast ofi": buckle, substantially as described.
