COLTER-CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 528,926, dated November 13, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK E. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oolter-Olasps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact-description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved form of clasp for attaching a colter to the beam of a plow, whether an ordinary beam plow, single sulky, or gang plow, and whatever may be the form or material of the beam.
The object of the invention is to enable the colter shank to be set at any desired angle to the beam with the shank of the colter fork in front or rear of the pivotal point, and to so construct the clasp as to obtain these results with ease and efficiency, and with the simplicity and durability of parts.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved colter clasp; Fig. 2, a plan of the bed plate of the clasp; and Fig. 3 a side view of the clasp as applied to the plow beam and showing different positions of the shank of the colter fork.
The clasp consists of a plate 1, adapted to be retained upon one side of a plow beam by means of bolts 2, one above and the other below the beam 3, passing through the opposite extremities of the plate 1, and through a corresponding plate or strap 4 upon the opposite side of the beam. The plate 1 has a central circular boss or projection 5 in the center of which is mounted the bolt or pin 6 forming the pivot upon which the socket plate 7 of the clasp turns. The socket plate consists of a circular part upon one side of which is formed the socket 8 through which passes the shank of the colter fork 9 and in which the latter is secured at any desired height by means of a set screw 10. The bed plate 1, of the clasp has surrounding the central boss 5 an annular series of radial teeth or corrugations 11, and the circular. part of the socket plate has a counter-sink corresponding to said boss and a similar series of teeth or corrugations adapted to fit between those of the bed plate to prevent the turning of the former upon the latter. The plates are clamped together in any desired position by means of a nut upon the extremity of the pivot 6. The bed plate bein g attached to the plow beam the socket plate may be turned to any desired angle thereto, and the number of angular positions and consequently the delicacy of adjustment is limited only by the number of radial corrugations.
The socket, as stated, is located upon one edge of the adjustable plate, and by so turning the latter that the socket lies either in front or rear of the pivotal point, the longitudinal position of the colter with reference to the beam may be materially altered. The bolts holding the clasp upon the beam may be of considerable length and threaded the greater part of their length, to adapt the clasp to fit either wood or metal beams.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a colter clasp, the combination with a bed plate and means for securing the same to the beam of a plow and having radial teeth or corrugations, of a socket plate having corresponding radial teeth or corrugations, a clamping bolt on which the socket plate may be turned as a pivot and having tightening means for clamping the socket plate in its desired position and the socket plate having its socket eccentric to its axis, substantially as described.
2. In a colter clasp, the combination with a bed plate and means for securing it to a plow beam, said bed plate having a boss or projection provided with radial teeth or corruga tions circularly arranged, of a socket plate having corresponding radial teeth or corrugations, a bolt having means for clamping said plates together and upon which bolt the socket plate may turn as a pivot, said socket plate having its socket eccentric to its pivotal axis and provided with adjustable means for engaging the shank of a colter, substantially as described.
